Losing Yourself in a Relationship: The Boyfriend Identity Trap
Aug 18, 202659 min
At first it feels like love. You spend every night with your girlfriend, stop answering the group chat, give up your hobbies and slowly build a social life that belongs more to her than to you. But what happens when your girlfriend becomes your entire life? In this episode of Failures Podcast, Rich and Justin unpack the boyfriend identity trap and why some men slowly lose themselves in a relationship. They explore relationship isolation, losing friends after getting a girlfriend, emotional dependence and what happens when your girlfriend becomes your only source of friendship, validation and social connection. They also discuss why your friends eventually stop inviting you out, how your hobbies and personal goals quietly disappear, why having a life outside your relationship does not mean you love your partner less and how to rebuild your friendships, fitness, confidence and identity without abandoning your relationship. If your girlfriend went away for the entire weekend, would you still have a life of your own? Failures Podcast 2026 We're not gods. We're not gurus. First-Generation Tax: Why You Feel Guilty Around Your Immigrant Parents
Aug 11, 20261h 1m
Being a first-generation American or the child of immigrant parents can come with a hidden pressure nobody prepares you for. As you become more successful, you may feel responsible for your parents financially, guilty for having opportunities they never had and trapped between building your own life and being the good son your family expects you to be. In this episode, Rich and Justin unpack the first-generation tax and the guilt, family expectations and financial pressure that can come with being the successful son of immigrant parents. They discuss growing up as the family translator and problem solver, trying to explain college and modern careers to immigrant parents and eventually becoming the person everyone calls when something goes wrong. Rich shares how he secretly used his mother's tax documents to complete his FAFSA application because she did not understand the process. Justin explains how close he came to leaving college because his family expected him to work and contribute rent. They also explore: • First-generation guilt and survivor's guilt • Financial pressure from immigrant parents • Becoming your family's emergency fund • The "good son contract" • Setting boundaries with parents • Family expectations and cultural pressure • Choosing your future without abandoning your family • Why success can sometimes feel like betrayal • Why changing does not make you disloyal You can love your parents and appreciate everything they sacrificed without making yourself responsible for solving every problem in their lives. The best way to honor your family's sacrifice is not to repeat their suffering. Failures Podcast 2026 We're not gods. We're not gurus. Every addiction starts as a bad habit that feels harmless. One drink after work. One sports bet. One late-night scroll. One more video. The real danger is not always the habit itself. It is the moment that habit becomes something you need just to feel normal. In this episode, Rich and Justin break down addiction creep and how small habits turn into addiction, dependency and compulsive behavior. They share personal stories involving nicotine, gambling addiction, porn addiction, food, dopamine, validation, success and control while exposing the excuses men use to convince themselves they do not have a problem. This conversation explores the warning signs that a habit is becoming an addiction, why denial keeps men trapped and how stress, trauma, insecurity and unaddressed pain can fuel compulsive behavior. Rich and Justin also explain why even positive things like working out, making money and chasing success can become unhealthy when your self-worth depends on them. This episode is not about shame or pretending to have all the answers. It is about recognizing when you are no longer choosing the habit and the habit is starting to choose for you. Because the first step toward taking back control is being honest about what has quietly taken control of you. Failures Podcast 2026 We're not gods. We're not gurus. The Corporate Mask: You Got the Job But Still Feel Out of Place
Jul 28, 20261h 2m
You got the job. You passed the interviews. You make more money than anyone in your family ever did. So why do you still feel like you don’t belong? In this episode of the Failures Podcast, Rich and Justin talk about the corporate mask — the exhausting feeling of code switching at work, changing how you speak, hiding parts of your personality, and trying to look “ polished ” in rooms you were never taught how to navigate. They break down imposter syndrome, corporate politics, workplace confidence, accents, cultural differences, and the pressure to fit into corporate America without losing who you are. This episode is for the guy who made it out of the hood, got the office job, started making real money, but still feels like a fraud every time he walks into a meeting. The message is simple: you are not less qualified because you feel uncomfortable. You already got in the room. Now you need to learn how to perform without shrinking yourself. The Childhood Bedroom Trap: Why Grown Men Still Live at Home
Jul 21, 20261h 2m
More grown men are living at home than ever before. Some are saving money, rebuilding after life hit them hard, helping their family, or trying to create a real plan. But some are hiding behind the economy, inflation, rent prices, and fake ambition while their parents keep carrying the weight. In this episode of Failures Podcast, Rich and Justin break down the childhood bedroom trap and the difference between using home as a temporary safety net versus turning it into a permanent hammock. They talk about dating while living with your parents, the false image of independence, the pressure of rent, the reality of roommates, and why moving out should be planned instead of impulsive. They also introduce the NEST roadmap : know your number, eliminate the leaks, stack your money and skills, and tell someone your move-out date. This is not about shame. It is about planned independence, adulthood, and becoming the kind of man who can stand on his own. Failures Podcast 2026 We're not gods. We're not gurus.
