Say Yes to the Side Hustle: How a Hobby Became Animal Media | Episode Twenty Eight
Say Yes to the Side Hustle: How a Hobby Became Animal Media | Episode Twenty Eight Rob is pacing around the studio with a handheld mic β literally can't stand still β because something has properly lit him up. A hobby that started three or four months ago has snowballed into a new business idea, a Shopify build started at 5am, and a growing TikTok community. This one's all energy. What We Cover The Physical Media Obsession Rob's a self-confessed gamer and film nerd, and a few months back he started reselling physical media β DVDs, Blu-rays, 4K steelbooks β picking them up at car boots and charity shops and relisting them on Vinted and eBay. It began as a wedding fund project. It's become something bigger. His TikTok, @AnimalSpence, now sits at around 1,600β1,700 followers with 10β15 new followers a day. The content covers his reselling journey, movie opinions, and all things physical media β and it's finding an audience, particularly with a younger generation rediscovering DVDs, CDs, and vinyl. Animal Media is Born The entrepreneur brain kicked in. Rob spotted a gap: people are sick of streaming subscriptions, but they still love films. There's no friction, no event, no ritual β just endless scrolling. He wants to bring back the experience of watching a movie. So he's been building animalmedia.co.uk on Shopify. The concept: mystery movie boxes (a film picked for you, no scrolling required) and movie night hampers β a random film plus popcorn, sweets, hot chocolate, the works. Available as one-offs or monthly subscriptions. He's also sitting on around 2,000 DVDs at home, so the stock problem is already solved. The Flow State Rob references The Talent Code and the concept of flow β that state where you're so locked into something that time disappears. He woke up at 5am to list DVDs, switched to website building, and didn't surface until 7am. He admits he forgot to wake his fiancΓ©e with a coffee. He regrets nothing. Why This Matters Beyond the Hobby This isn't just about DVDs. Building Animal Media is teaching Rob Shopify, e-commerce SEO, AI-generated imagery, short-form video production, and paid social β skills that feed directly back into his work with clients at Paragon. It's a live sandbox. Everything he tests on Animal Media makes him sharper at his day job. The Yes Man Lesson He had Yes Man on in the background while building. The takeaway lands: opportunities are everywhere, but most people say no to them out of habit or comfort. Rob said yes to this one. He doesn't know exactly where it goes β but the learning, the creating, and the energy it's unlocked are already worth it. Key Takeaway A hobby with an audience is a business waiting to happen. Say yes to the thing that excites you, learn as you build, and let the momentum take you somewhere you didn't plan to go. Follow Rob on TikTok at @AnimalSpence and visit animalmedia.co.uk to grab a mystery movie box or sign up for a monthly subscription.
