  61. The Deep Sea Sci-fi/Horror of 1989, feat. Patrick Ripoll of 96 Greers (Part 1 of 2)

  Jun 8, 20262h 21m

BENEATH THE WAVES ROILS A MURKY STEW OF KILLER ALIENS, MONSTROUS MUTANTS, PSYCHOTIC SOLDIERS, AND EVIL CORPORATIONS!! Welcome to another of Genre Grinder's patented deep(sea)-dives into a single year in cinema when a specific genre fad peaked. This time, Gabe and Patrick Ripoll are looking at a strange moment in time, the year 1989, when seven different undersea sci-fi/horror/adventures were released*. How did this happen? Your intrepid podcasters will attempt to answer that and other questions in this very damp two-part special episode. Part one covers the three studio releases: James Cameron's The Abyss, Sean S. Cunningham's DeepStar Six, and George P. Cosmatos' Leviathan. Part two will feature the B-to-Z-grade examples: Mary Ann Fisher's Lords of the Deep, Antonio Margheriti's Alien of the Deep (Italian: Alien degli abissi), Jean-Claude Dubois & Wayne Crawford's The Evil Below, and Juan Piquer Simón's The Rift (Spanish: La grieta). * Technically six, but we'll get into that in part two. 00:00 – Intro: An Abridged History of Underwater Science Fiction and the Impact of Alien & Aliens 20:04 – The Abyss 1:07:53 – DeepStar Six 1:45:38 – Leviathan 2:17:44 – Outro

Episode 58: The Neurotic Women of '70s Giallo, feat. Sharon Gissy of Mental Filmness

  Feb 10, 20261h 52m

SPLIT PERSONALITIES! BURIED TRAUMA! DEMANDING CAREERS! SHITTY BOYFRIENDS! COLD-BLOODED MURDER! IT'S HARD OUT HERE FOR A WOMAN!! We've already talked about the giallo movies released during the genre's peak year of 1971 with Patrick and covered several of the American films found in the pages of Kier-La Janisse's House of Psychotic Women with Bill, so why not join Gabe and first-time guest host Sharon Gissy for a look at the female-centric gialli also found in Janisse's autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation film? This month's titles include Francesco Barilli's The Perfume of the Lady in Black (Italian: Il profumo della signora in nero, 1974), Carlos Aured's Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll (Spanish: Spanish: Los ojos azules de la muñeca rota; aka: House of Psychotic Women, 1973, released in '74), Armando Crispino's Autopsy (Italian: Macchie solari, 1975), and Luigi Bazzoni's Footprints (Italian: Le orme, 1975). Please note that the podcasting app I use mistakenly recorded Sharon's laptop's built-in microphone instead of the one she was using, so there are some muffling and static issues with her audio. I've done what I could to correct this, but be ready for some minor crackles, pops, and inconsistencies. 00:00 – Intro 7:58 – Perfume of the Lady in Black 32:08 – Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll 52:55 – Autopsy 1:17:44 – Footprints 1:47:39 – Outro, including the other giallo titles in Janisse's book Visit the Mental Filmness website: https://mentalfilmness.com/ Check out Kier-La Janisse's House of Psychotic Women website: https://houseofpsychoticwomen.com/ Read Michael Mackenzie's essay Gender, Genre and Sociocultural Change in the Giallo: 1970-1975: https://theses.gla.ac.uk/4730/ Outro song: "Walking on the Moon" by Rabbit Junk
