Keep Praying
1 Kings 18:43–44 (ESV): “And he went up and looked and said, ‘There is nothing.’ And he said, ‘Go again,’ seven times. And at the seventh time he said, ‘Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.’” Have you ever prayed for something, waited for an answer, and still saw nothing? You prayed. You trusted God. You waited. But the situation did not seem to change. Elijah knew what that was like. God had already promised in 1 Kings 18:1 that He would send rain after years of drought. Elijah believed God’s promise. He told King Ahab that rain was coming, then went to the top of Mount Carmel, bowed himself before God, and prayed. After praying, Elijah sent his servant to look toward the sea. The servant returned with a disappointing report: “There is nothing.” But Elijah did not stop praying. He told him, “Go again.” Again the servant looked. Still nothing. Elijah continued until the seventh time, when the servant finally reported seeing a small cloud rising from the sea. Soon the sky became dark, and a great rain came. Elijah teaches us an important lesson about prayer: God’s apparent silence does not mean we should immediately stop praying. Persistent prayer does not force God to act or change His unwilling mind. Rather, it expresses our continuing trust in Him. Elijah persevered because he knew what God had promised. He trusted God even when there was still no visible evidence of the answer. Sometimes we become discouraged because we expect God to answer immediately. But God may use the waiting to deepen our dependence on Him, strengthen our faith, and teach us to trust His timing. Jesus Himself taught His disciples that they “ought always to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1). So when you pray and the answer seems to be, “There is nothing,” do not quickly conclude that God is doing nothing. Keep trusting. Keep waiting. Keep praying. Not because you can control the outcome, but because you can trust the God who hears, knows, and keeps His promises. Reflection: Is there something you have stopped praying about because you have not yet seen an answer? How can you continue trusting God while waiting for His timing? Prayer: Lord, teach me to pray with faith and perseverance. When I do not see an answer, keep me from losing heart. Help me trust Your wisdom, Your timing, and Your promises. May my prayers express my dependence on You, knowing that You hear me and that Your will is always best. Amen.
