Hamden Catholic Homily: August 30, 2026
Today is August 30, 2026 - the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our celebrants were Fr. Lee Hellwig and Deacon Dominic Corraro. What does God want of me? It’s one of the most fundamental questions of the Christian life, yet doing God’s will doesn’t always come easy to us. In the Gospels, even Peter - the rock upon which the Church was built - struggled to align his way of thinking with God’s plan. Loving Jesus meant wanting to protect Him from suffering, but Jesus reminded Peter that the path of true faithfulness required taking up the cross. Following God often asks us to step out of alignment with the ways of the world and embrace self-renunciation. But we aren’t left to climb that steep mountain alone. Just like the prophet Jeremiah, we have a fire burning in our hearts - the Holy Spirit - empowering us to follow Christ even when the cost is high. When we stay faithful to that inner fire, we don't lose ourselves..., we discover who God created us to be.
