The FDA Peptide Vote: Why the 503A Recommendation is Not a Green Light | Client Alert
This is an important advisory for all practice owners and prescribing clinicians: an FDA advisory committee recently voted to recommend adding four peptides to the 503A bulk substances list, doing so over the explicit objection of the FDA's own scientists. While this vote has generated significant buzz, it is critical to understand that the 503A list is the sole legal authority to compound a substance. Until a peptide is officially on it, a pharmacy compounding that peptide is doing so in direct violation of FDA direction. Do not start prescribing these peptides based solely on this vote. The committee's recommendation is entirely non-binding. The FDA still has to consult with the USP, publish a proposed rule, take public comment, and issue a final determination—a rigorous regulatory process that takes 6 to 12 months at an absolute minimum. Listen in to understand the realities of this timeline and learn how to protect your medical license while the FDA finalizes its ruling. For more health law updates, visit texashealthlaw.com.
