Cannabis Sex Testing, HLVd, Plant Genetics & More with Jackson Farmer | Cannabis DNA Testing Explained
Aug 12, 202659 min
In this week's interview, I sit down with Jackson Farmer, who runs a specialist DNA and sex-testing company for cannabis plants. We take a deep dive into the science behind cannabis sex testing, looking at how plant DNA can be analysed to determine sex at a much earlier stage than growers would normally be able to tell by looking at the plant. Jackson explains how the testing process works, what growers can learn from their plant's genetics, and how DNA technology could potentially save growers time, space and resources when planning a crop. We also get into the increasingly discussed issue of HLVd (Hop Latent Viroid), what it is, why growers are concerned about it, and how testing can play a role in identifying problems. But this isn't all cannabis science! We also take a few interesting detours into dog fostering, Jackson's experiences outside the cannabis industry, and plenty of other subjects along the way. It's a fascinating conversation that brings together cannabis cultivation, genetics, modern DNA technology and a few unexpected tangents. Whether you're a home grower interested in the science behind your plants or simply curious about where cannabis testing technology is heading, there's plenty to get stuck into. Supercropping Autos, Lollipopping Outdoors, Over-Dried Bud, Trichomes vs Terpenes & Life Beyond Earth | Listener Mail #9
Aug 7, 202646 min
It's time for another Listener Mail episode, and this week the High on Home Grown community has delivered another brilliant mix of growing questions, thought-provoking discussions, and the usual off-the-rails conversations that make these episodes so much fun. We kick things off by discussing what to do when you accidentally snap a branch during plant training, comparing different types of tape for repairs and whether breathable options offer any real advantages. We also explore whether supercropping autoflowers is worth the risk, and answer questions about lollipopping outdoor plants, looking at how outdoor training differs from growing indoors. The panel also discusses whether over-dried cannabis loses potency, how drying conditions affect the final product, and whether experienced growers should be paying more attention to terpene development than trichome colour when deciding the perfect time to harvest. Along the way, we answer a few fun questions, including which fantasy character we'd most like to be, and tackle one of Margaret's famous thought experiments about what we'd do if we suddenly inherited £100 million. To round off the episode, the conversation drifts into one of our favourite rabbit holes: space, the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and what might really be out there beyond our little blue planet. As always, it's another relaxed episode packed with practical growing advice, cannabis science, philosophical tangents, and plenty of laughs with the High on Home Grown community. The Future of LED Grow Lights with Thomas Gibson, Founder & CEO of Grand Master LED | Interview
Aug 5, 20261h 13m
In this week's interview, I sit down with Thomas Gibson, the founder and CEO of Grand Master LED, to talk about one of the most important pieces of equipment in any indoor grow: the grow light. Thomas shares the story behind Grand Master LED, explaining what inspired him to start the company and how it has grown into one of the most respected names in high-performance LED lighting. We discuss the latest developments in their lighting technology, take a look at some of their newest models, and talk about what growers can expect from the next generation of Grand Master LED products. We also get a sneak peek at the company's upcoming line of nutrients and the thinking behind expanding beyond lighting. As the conversation unfolds, we venture away from cannabis growing and chat about fitness, health, and some of the sports injuries Thomas has picked up over the years. It's a relaxed, honest conversation covering entrepreneurship, innovation, personal challenges, and plenty of practical advice for growers looking to get the most out of their indoor gardens. Whether you're interested in LED technology, growing better cannabis, or hearing the story behind a successful company in the industry, this is an interview you won't want to miss.
