His colleague, Jean-Baptiste Delambre took the Paris to Dunkirk route. Together they'll provide an accurate measurement of one ten millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. The results will end the confusion of yards, feet and inches, and define the meter, a new, simple measurement in units of 10. They both ran into problems, adventures, and prison time, but it was a hidden mathematical error of no more than three-tenths of an arc-second that would haunt Pierre to his grave - even though we all live with it today in happy oblivion.
