124: Heart Disease Myths Exposed: Statins, LDL, Estradiol, Testosterone, & the Truth
Aug 16, 202651 min
Heart disease is still the leading cause of death, yet many people are left wondering whether they're focusing on the right risk factors. In this episode, I sit down with board-certified cardiac surgeon Dr. Philip Ovadia to discuss how his perspective shifted from treating advanced heart disease in the operating room to helping people prevent it in the first place. We talk through common questions about cholesterol, LDL, statins, coronary calcium scores, and why he believes heart health requires looking beyond a single lab value to better understand metabolic health, inflammation, and insulin resistance. Topics We Cover in This Episode: What LDL cholesterol can and cannot tell you about heart disease risk How insulin resistance and inflammation fit into the bigger picture When a statin may make sense and when other factors deserve attention first The current conversation around bioidentical hormones and cardiovascular health Who should consider a coronary artery calcium scan and what the results can tell you Why metabolic health may be one of the most important pieces of heart disease prevention Practical questions to ask when evaluating your own cardiovascular risk Resources & Links Take the Quiz with Dr. Ovadia: https://ifixhearts.com/ Order Dr. Ovadia’s Books: https://ifixhearts.com/books/ Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine ️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine ️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353
123: Hashimoto’s, Thyroid Labs, and Exercise: Are You Helping Your Body or Stressing It More?
Aug 9, 20261h 5m
If you have Hashimoto’s and feel like you’re doing everything “right” but somehow feeling worse, this episode is for you. I’m answering your most frequently asked questions about Hashimoto’s, exercise, thyroid labs, thyroid antibodies, medication adjustments, estrogen, and why symptoms don’t always match what your lab work says. Throughout our conversation, I explain why looking at one lab value or one symptom in isolation often leads to frustration, and why understanding the bigger picture is essential when managing thyroid disease. I also share ways to think about exercise, recovery, inflammation, medication tolerance, and the relationship between your thyroid, gut, hormones, metabolism, and stress response. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why exercising harder isn't always the best strategy for Hashimoto's How to recognize when your workouts are exceeding your body's recovery capacity Why thyroid antibodies can fluctuate without necessarily signaling that your condition is worsening How to interpret thyroid labs alongside symptoms instead of viewing them separately The connection between stress, gut health, blood sugar, hormones, and thyroid function Why some people feel overstimulated on thyroid medication even when their labs suggest they need more Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine ️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine ️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353
122: Drain Before You Detox: The Missing Link Between Gut Health, Hormones, & Mold Recovery with Marina Ortega (The Poop Fairy)
Aug 2, 202648 min
If you're dealing with constipation, bloating, brain fog, or you feel like every detox protocol makes you feel worse instead of better, this conversation is for you. In this episode, I'm joined by Marina Ortega, founder of Scottsdale Hydrotherapy and co-founder of Trust Your Gut, to talk about one piece of healing she believes is often overlooked: supporting your body's drainage pathways before asking it to detox. Marina shares her own journey through chronic constipation, mold exposure, and years of searching for answers before becoming a gut health educator. We also discuss what colon hydrotherapy actually is, how the lymphatic system, bile flow, and bowel function work together to support the body's natural detox pathways, and why so many people struggle to feel better even after trying supplements and cleanses. Marina also shares what she learned while recovering from severe mold exposure, her perspective on tools like castor oil packs and coffee enemas, and why she believes the gut-brain connection is an essential part of lasting healing. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why Marina says drainage should come before any detox protocol What colon hydrotherapy actually involves—and what to expect during a session How constipation can impact hormones, brain fog, and overall health The connection between the lymphatic system, bile flow, and detoxification What Marina learned from recovering from severe mold exposure How castor oil packs and coffee enemas fit into her wellness approach Why stress and nervous system regulation can show up as digestive symptoms Simple ways to support your body's natural elimination pathways Resources & Links Trust Your Gut: https://www.trustyourgut.shop/ Order Dr. Cassie’s Book ‘Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones’: https://guthormonefix.com/ Use code LISTEN10 for 10 % off your order on shopmodernendocrine.com Follow Dr. Cassie Smith & Modern Endocrine Website: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/modernendocrine_/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ModernEndocrine ️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@modernendocrine ️ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@modernendocrine?lang=en Newsletter: https://linktr.ee/modernendocrine ➡️ Disclaimer: https://www.modernendocrineokc.com/disclaimer-6353
120: From PCOS to PMOS; Why Hormones Are Not the Only Problem
Jul 19, 202633 min
In this interview with Terri DeNeui, we explore why the conversation around PCOS is shifting toward a broader understanding of metabolic health with the emerging term PMOS. Rather than viewing irregular cycles, infertility, and hormone imbalances as isolated ovarian problems, we discuss how insulin resistance, gut health, inflammation, stress, and lifestyle factors may be driving many of the symptoms women experience. I also share why this updated perspective could change the way clinicians evaluate and support patients across different stages of life—not just during their reproductive years. We also spend time talking about practical treatment considerations, from comprehensive lab testing and lifestyle interventions to the appropriate role of GLP-1 medications. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why some experts are moving from the term PCOS to PMOS—and what that shift represents How insulin resistance and gut health may influence hormone balance Why irregular menstrual cycles deserve a broader metabolic evaluation The role inflammation and stress may play in hormone-related symptoms Why body composition can be a more meaningful measure than weight alone How to think about GLP-1 medications as one tool rather than a complete solution Practical lifestyle habits that support long-term metabolic and hormonal health Why treating symptoms without addressing underlying metabolic dysfunction may leave important questions unanswered If you're interested in a more comprehensive way of thinking about hormones, metabolism, and women's health, I think you'll find this conversation both practical and thought-provoking. 119: Beyond Sick Care: Why Insurance Isn’t Coming To Save You
Jul 12, 20261 hour
For many people, the healthcare system becomes frustrating long before they receive a diagnosis. Symptoms are dismissed, lab work comes back "normal," and the next step is often another prescription rather than a conversation about why those symptoms developed in the first place. In this episode, I'm joined by board-certified anesthesiologist and hormone optimization specialist Dr. Mike Fortunato to discuss his journey from conventional medicine into functional medicine, and why he believes many patients are looking for something today's healthcare model wasn't designed to provide. Our conversation explores the realities of practicing medicine inside an insurance-driven system, the role hormones play in long-term health, and what Dr. Mike observed after years of caring for increasingly unhealthy surgical patients. Topics We Cover in This Episode: Why "normal" lab results don't always reflect optimal health How Dr. Mike's own health challenges changed the way he practices medicine What anesthesiology taught him about the declining health of today's patients Why hormone optimization is about more than treating symptoms How insurance influences the care many patients receive The role lifestyle plays alongside hormone health Why prevention often receives less attention than disease management How patients can become stronger advocates for their own health If you've been searching for a broader perspective on healthcare, hormones, and long-term wellness, I hope you'll join us for this conversation.
