Resident Evil 5: “He’s Back, and He’s Jacked”
Chris Redfield is back, baby! And so is Hot Zombie Summer in our first episode on Resident Evil 5 . As is the case in HZS fashion, this is our episode-before-the-gameplay episode. So we spend the majority of our conversation chatting about RE5 ’s development (and what was left on the proverbial cutting room floor) as well as breaking down the game’s cast of characters and gameplay mechanics. We also debut a brand-new segment of the pod—”Critical Hit or CHtBSotBM?” What’s this acronym stand for? You’ll have to tune in to find out! Also, be sure to keep an ear out for mention of why it sucks when corporate chodes introduce video games at game shows, some Ben Franklin slander, detailed speculation as to who came up with the phrase “Less is More,” and highlighting the RE franchise’s first team, all-deceased helicopter pilots. ** Time Stamps: 0:00-13:01 – Introduction to Resident Evil 5 13:02-47:12 – Development: The western-ification of Japanese video games in the late 2000s; discarded set pieces, characters, and ideas; big studio production; thematic and narrative throughline; the horniness of the development team; the RE4 - RE5 (dis)connection; and miscellany 47:13-1:01:55 – “Is RE5 racist?” 1:01:56-1:28:52 – “Ozwell that ends well” AKA Getting to know the characters of Resident Evil 5 1:28:53-1:51:05 – “Tom Clancy’s Resident Evil 5”: Gameplay dynamics ft. military shooter stylings, co-op partners, and ditching the attaché case 1:51:06-End – Wrap-up and outro ** Shoutout to, uh, Capcom, who authored the book The Art of Resident Evil 5 and produced the documentary The Making of Resident Evil 5 , both of which we consulted during this podcast. Big props as well to Michael Everette Hensley, the composer of our podcast theme music.
