HOTELLIGENCE PODCAST
Season 3, Ep. 3: The Refusal Happens at the Counter
Season 3 of the Hotelligence Podcast examines where the property meets the law. The counter, the room, the parking lot, the record. These episodes look at the legal instruments hotel operators use every day, often without knowing they are legal instruments, and what those instruments require to hold. Season 3 remains non-directive and does not offer instructions or calls to action. In this episode, Jim and Don move from the list to the moment the list gets used. A do-not-rent entry is policy, written in daylight by someone with context and time. A refusal is an event, delivered at the counter, out loud, often by the most junior person in the building, in front of whoever happens to be watching. Jim and Don discuss why the reason spoken at the counter becomes the property's official reason, why an improvised explanation can create exposure the ban itself never carried, and why every refusal produces a second record, held partly by people the property does not control. The focus remains on clarity, restraint, and understanding that the refusal happens at the counter.
