Willing to Go
Being part of a church can sometimes mean attending services and enjoying events and programs. But Jesus has a completely different definition: he sees being part of God’s family as being part of God’s MISSION. And so, at the end of his earthly time with his disciples, he sends them out with a Great Commission to GO into the whole world with his message of forgiveness. In this week’s message, we’ll allow Jesus to give us that same challenge: we’ll hear him call us to grow in our boldness and bravery so that we can reach more people together. Then we’ll take a couple of minutes to go around and share where we’ve seen God at work in our lives this week. Specifically, how have we applied the Action Steps from last week? As a reminder, they were: 1. Address the doubt or fear that stands in your way of trusting God and 2. Take a bold step in the direction Jesus is leading you. Introduction Throughout this series, we’ve been looking at ordinary people who trusted God enough to take courageous steps of faith. Sometimes what keeps us from taking those steps isn’t that we don’t want to follow Jesus. We simply don’t feel ready. We focus on our limitations, fears, or lack of confidence and wonder whether we have what it takes. But following Jesus doesn’t depend on our own strength or confidence. We can trust him to be with us, even when what he asks feels beyond our abilities. This week, as we finish our Overcome series, we’ll explore the mission Jesus gives his followers and what it means for each of us and for Journey of Faith. Connect Let’s start our discussion time with some “get-to-know-you” questions. Are you usually someone who likes trying new things or prefers what’s familiar? What’s something you’ve tried that took you outside your comfort zone? What helps you feel more comfortable trying something new? Opening When Jesus gave his followers the Great Commission, he asked them to do something much bigger than themselves: go and make disciples of all nations. But Jesus surrounded that command with two important promises. He has all authority, and he will always be with them. That changes the way we think about courage. Boldness isn’t believing we’re more capable than we thought. It’s trusting that Jesus is with us as we obey him. This leads us to our main idea for the week : With Jesus’ presence, we can boldly obey him and GO. Unpack Read each set of verses out loud as a group, making observations as you go. Afterward, discuss each of the connected questions before moving to the next set of verses. Read: Matthew 28:18–20 In this passage, Jesus gives his followers a mission to make disciples and promises that they will never carry out that mission alone. What words or phrases stand out to you in Jesus’ instructions? What does Jesus actually tell his followers to do? How might have Jesus’ promise to be with them changed how the disciples viewed his mission for them. Where might Jesus be asking you to “go” in the ordinary places and relationships of your life? Read: Acts 1:8 In this passage, just before returning to heaven, Jesus tells his followers that the Holy Spirit will give them power to be his witnesses, beginning where they are and expanding outward to increasingly distant places. According to Jesus, where does the power to carry out his mission come from? What does Jesus say his followers will receive power to do? Jesus talks about reaching others. If our church was our “Jerusalem, what might it look like for us to move into new areas of the South Bay with the Good news of Jesus. What might this expanding picture of mission look like for us—personally and together as Journey of Faith? Reflect: The Future of Journey of Faith In the message on Sunday, Pastor Jason talked about starting a third campus and making improvements at our Manhattan Beach campus. We believe that God is doing great things in the South Bay, and we’re excited about how these plans will help us be part of what he’s doing. Take some time to reflect and discuss: How does creating a third campus relate to the Bible passages we just looked at? What opportunities could a third campus create for the people who already live, work, attend school, and have relationships in that part of the South Bay? What excites you about Journey of Faith and where God is leading us? Action Step This is where we take what we’ve discussed and put it into practice. Read the Action Steps below and discuss how you can live them out this week in practical ways. 1. Commit to be a brave part of the mission with Journey this year. Ask God to show you how he wants you to participate in what he is doing through our church and throughout the South Bay. Maybe your next step is to pray regularly for our church and its future, serve in a new way, connect more deeply, support the upcoming campaign, or simply become more aware of the people God has placed around you. 2. Make an audacious goal of inviting five people to our Christmas services. Think about the people God has already placed in your life—neighbors, coworkers, friends, classmates, or family members. Make a list of ten people who would benefit from connecting with Jesus and Journey of Faith. Pray for those people and see which five God draws your attention to. Then invite them to Christmas services. And if one or two say yes, consider how you can help make their experience welcoming and comfortable. Who are one or two people who immediately come to mind? Let’s share one way we can practically apply one or both Action Steps so we can encourage and pray for one another. Closing Following Jesus will sometimes take us into places that feel unfamiliar or bigger than we are. But Jesus never asks us to go alone. The same Jesus who says, “Go and make disciples” also says, “I am with you always.” Our confidence doesn’t come from believing we’re strong enough, prepared enough, or fearless enough. It comes from knowing who goes with us. So wherever Jesus is asking us to go—across the street, into a difficult conversation, toward someone who needs encouragement, or together into the next chapter of our church—we can boldly take the next step with him. Pray Together As we wrap up, we’ll invite anyone who would like to share something we can pray for together. You can share or just pass. Also, below is a Journey of Faith Missionary we can pray for as we close. Missionary Focus Cody and Lexie Ministry Description Cody and Lexie are serving in Ireland, partnering with a local church to build relationships and share the message of Jesus. Prayer Requests That the ministry leaders can navigate cultural shifts For God to soften the hearts of the local people as they hear the gospel Memorization Verse When practiced consistently, memorizing Bible verses can be an important spiritual practice that centers your mind around the truth God has given us. Matthew 28:18-20 Daily Devotional Using a practice called the “Discovery Method,” reflect on the verses below. For each passage of Scripture, ask yourself these questions: What do these verses reveal about who God is? What do these verses reveal about us/others? What do these verses invite or inspire you to think, feel, or do? Day 1: Genesis 12:1–4 Day 2: Joshua 1:7–9 Day 3: Psalm 121:1–8 Day 4: Luke 10:1–9 Day 5: 2 Corinthians 5:18–20 Day 6: Acts 1:6–8 The post Willing to Go appeared first on Journey of Faith .
