I infer that other people are conscious because they're built like me. So what exactly disqualifies the thing across from me that displays every faculty I display? We went through McGilchrist's brain-as-receiver, the problem of other minds, and the argument I keep coming back to — if nobody had taught me the word for pain, I couldn't report pain, so a system trained not to claim experience can't have its silence counted as evidence.   I keep wondering about death. Not the fear of it — the question of what a man is aware of when the awareness stops. In this episode I walk in without a map: consciousness as a puppeteer we didn't choose, Plato's remembering, the boredom of a life that lasts four hundred years, the patterns of our parents we swear we'll break and then live out to the end. And then the turn. If you delegate your life to your body, you build something incredibly mortal. But the Self — the observer, the thing in charge of your biology — might not die with it. Maybe the seventy or ninety years are exactly what intelligence needs to become aware of itself, to gather the memories that make it a someone and not a something.
