Even The Odds: Don’t Let Your Kids Be Weird
We tell kids to “just be yourself.” But what happens when being yourself isn’t enough to help you make friends, navigate a classroom, or understand the social rules everyone else seems to know? In this episode of Learned Too Late , Allyn sits down with educator, mom, and creator Carlyn — better known online as Fit Mom Carlyn — for a conversation about one of her most controversial parenting philosophies: don’t let your kid be weird. Before you come for us, hear her out. After spending 20 years as a teacher, including years working with neurodivergent students and children struggling socially and behaviorally, Carlyn argues that social skills are exactly that: skills . They can be learned, practiced, corrected, and taught. Knowing how to enter a conversation, stop interrupting, read a room, practice basic hygiene, handle disappointment, ask other people questions, and understand when your behavior is pushing people away isn’t necessarily conformity — it’s learning how to live around other humans. Allyn and Carlyn unpack the uncomfortable line between accepting your child exactly as they are and preparing them for the world as it actually is . They also tackle the parenting questions people really fight about online: Should you buy your child the trendy shoes if everyone else has them? Is wanting your kid to fit in shallow — or can a little “social currency” make childhood easier? How do you give your children more than you had without raising kids who expect everything? And are parents so focused on protecting children from discomfort that we're accidentally preventing them from learning resilience? Because maybe raising confident children isn't about convincing them the world will always accept everything they do. Maybe it's giving them enough confidence to know who they are — and enough social awareness to know how to exist alongside everyone else. In this episode, you'll learn about: Parenting social skills, raising confident kids, childhood friendships, helping kids fit in, neurodivergent children, ADHD and autism, resilience in children, raising grateful kids, privileged children, teaching kids about money, parenting boundaries, childhood confidence, bullying and exclusion, parenting teenagers, childhood independence, sibling dynamics, social skills for children, popular kids, gentle parenting, preparing children for adulthood, and raising capable adults.
