Measuring Movement, Planar Plasticity & the Future of Assessment with Ryan Comeau
Send us Fan Mail What if one of the most important things we assess in healthcare is also one of the things we measure least objectively? This week on Leave Your Mark , I sit down with Dr. Ryan Comeau, chiropractor, former NCAA Division I hockey goaltender, founder of Kinetisense, and creator of the NeuroPlanar Method. Ryan’s journey begins in sport, where years in the crease taught him about grit, adaptability, and the difference between quitting and pivoting. Injuries eventually changed the direction of his athletic career. Still, they also led him toward healthcare and a question that would ultimately shape his professional life: Why are we still assessing human movement primarily with our eyes and tools that have existed for centuries? That question led Ryan to build Kinetisense, a clinical-grade 3D markerless motion-capture platform designed to give practitioners objective movement data while augmenting, rather than replacing, clinical expertise. Our conversation explores Ryan’s evolution from athlete to clinician to entrepreneur; the challenges of bringing new technology into healthcare; the NeuroPlanar Method; planar plasticity; early sport specialization; and what three-dimensional movement data can reveal that our eyes may miss. We also get into something I find particularly interesting: how objective technology might help us validate, challenge, and ultimately sharpen the clinical observations experienced practitioners have developed over decades. A fascinating conversation about movement, measurement, entrepreneurship, and the willingness to keep asking better questions.
