Episode #49
"Light in the Land" - Program #49 (Warren's Shaft & Hezekiah's Tunnel)
Today's topic is "Warren's Shaft" and Hezekiah's Tunnel. Located with today's City of David (covered in last week's episode) is the ancient water system of biblical Jerusalem. In this episode, Dr. John first walks us through Warren's Shaft." Named after Charles Warren in the 1880s, this series of tunnels dates to the Jebusite / Canaanite Period (Middle Bronze - Late Bronze). The 52 foot vertical shaft once believed to be the "shaft" David's men climbed up (2 Samuel 5) probably now wasn't even there until the 8th century BC. Next, we walk through Hezekiah's Tunnel, a 1,700-foot tunnel carved by chisel by two teams of rock-cutters (based on the inscription found towards the end of the tunnel). The tunnel was built in advance of the Assyrian army coming to Jerusalem in 701 BC (see 2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32, and Isaiah 8:6). We still walk through both tunnels today!
