Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman: Iraq, Purple Heart, White House & the American Dream
In this episode of Living History with Alex , we sit down with Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman , a retired U.S. Army officer and Purple Heart recipient who served for 21 years, from 1999 to 2020. His remarkable journey took him from arriving in the United States as a refugee from the Soviet Union to serving as an infantry officer, Army Ranger, diplomat, strategist, and eventually a member of the White House National Security Council . Vindman shares the story of his family leaving the Soviet Union in search of freedom and opportunity, growing up in New York City, and the powerful influence of his father, who taught him the importance of hard work, honesty, and treating everyone equally under the law. Those values would later shape both his military career and his approach to public service. He takes Alex through his Army journey, including Airborne and Ranger School , assignments in Korea and Germany, and the moment he learned about the September 11 attacks while undergoing Ranger training. He recalls realizing immediately that the United States was entering a new era of war and that his generation of soldiers would soon be called upon to serve. One of the most powerful moments of the conversation is Vindman's firsthand account of being wounded during the Second Battle of Fallujah in 2004 . While traveling in a convoy, a roadside explosive penetrated his vehicle, severely injuring two Marines and wounding Vindman. He describes how his training immediately took over as he ordered the vehicle out of the kill zone, assessed his wounded teammates, and took command of the situation—an attack for which he later received the Purple Heart. Vindman also reflects on his later career as a diplomat in Moscow and Kyiv , his work as a Pentagon strategist focused on Russia, and his eventual service on the National Security Council. He discusses the responsibility of making decisions that can affect national security and millions of lives, as well as the importance of integrity and public service even when doing the right thing carries personal consequences.
