74. When Early-Onset Dementia Changes Your Marriage: 5 Ways to Love Your Husband When He’s Not the Same
Early-onset dementia changes more than memory and communication. It changes the marriage. You may still love your husband deeply while also grieving the man he used to be. You may miss the conversations, the partnership, the affection, the decision-making, and the feeling of simply being his wife instead of constantly being his caregiver. In this episode, we talk about what it looks like to keep loving your husband when your marriage no longer looks the way it once did. You’ll learn how to stop comparing today’s marriage to the past, recognize love in new forms, separate the disease from the man you love, give yourself permission to grieve, and allow Jesus to fill the places your husband may no longer be able to. We also talk about one simple but powerful practice: creating a “Wife Moment” where you step out of caregiver mode and simply spend intentional time loving the man in front of you. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why comparing your marriage today to the way it used to be can deepen grief and resentment How to recognize connection and love even when they look different Why dementia-related changes can sometimes feel like rejection How grief and faith can exist at the same time Why Jesus must become your steady foundation when your marriage feels uncertain How to create a simple “Wife Moment” this week Scriptures mentioned: Ecclesiastes 7:10 “Do not say, ‘Why were the old days better than these?’ For it is not wise to ask such questions.” Proverbs 16:9 “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Psalm 62:8 “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Your challenge this week: Create one intentional Wife Moment. Take a drive. Sit on the porch. Look through pictures. Watch a favorite movie. Hold hands. Listen to your song. Go get ice cream. For just a little while, don’t manage, correct, remind, or fix. Simply be present. Because underneath all the appointments, responsibilities, paperwork, and caregiving, you are still his wife.
