THEY KNEW THE MOUNTAINS WERE CHANGING: Nepal, Tibet & the Warnings Before the Disaster
What did governments know before the catastrophic August 26, 2026 disaster along the Nepal–Tibet border? In this follow-up to “What Happened to Free Tibet?”, Mama Rae investigates what was known before the mountain came down. Scientists had warned for years that Himalayan glaciers were rapidly changing. Transboundary glacial floods had repeatedly affected Nepal, including a devastating 2025 flood in this same border corridor. Then, on May 27, 2026 — just three months before the catastrophe — Nepali and Chinese officials met to discuss glaciers, floods, hazard mapping and disaster preparedness. According to Reuters, Nepal wanted expanded information about early glacier movement that could help warn downstream communities. Three months later, catastrophe struck.
