Buck's Big Adventure
Chris and Buck kick things off the way only Matters Not can, completely forgetting to introduce the damn podcast until roughly 30 minutes into the conversation. Before that happens, the guys bounce between music, movies, childhood memories, and the question of why some songs hit you emotionally while others are just background noise. The conversation gets surprisingly nostalgic as they talk about growing up with limited access to music, their first CDs, ICP, Sublime, Tupac, System of a Down, Sleep Token, and the songs that actually managed to mean something to them. They also revisit childhood movies and how much the entertainment world has changed since they were kids. From there, food and memories take over. Chris and Buck reminisce about Dog n Suds, Waffle House after exhausting mill shifts, scrapple, corned beef hash, and the legendary lemon meringue pie that Buck discovered during an out-of-town job. They talk about how certain meals and places become permanently attached to specific moments in your life, especially when exhaustion, camaraderie, and a hard day's work are involved. Then the real adventure begins. Buck has finally started taking steps toward making one of his long-running dreams a reality, traveling to Vietnam. After years of talking about it, he's getting his identification situation squared away, applying for a passport, and looking into an international driver's license. His inspiration comes partly from a Top Gear Vietnam special, which planted the idea of crossing the country by motorcycle and seeing the country for himself. The plan is about as Buck as it gets. He doesn't want a carefully organized tour. He wants a motorcycle, a backpack, minimal belongings, and a route from one end of Vietnam to the other. At one point, the dream even involved building a Viking longhouse there. Chris immediately starts imagining the podcast being recorded from Buck's future Vietnamese Viking longhouse. The guys also debate what kind of motorcycle Buck should ride, the possibility of renting a cruiser or Enduro-style bike, the language barrier, and how technology might make navigating a foreign country easier. Of course, Buck's confidence in spontaneous travel gets tested when the conversation turns to his recent West Virginia adventure with his kids. He admits he barely planned the trip at all. What began as a kayaking trip turned into a wandering expedition involving the Cacapon, New River Gorge, Dolly Sods, rain, fog, questionable navigation, and an unexpectedly creepy old hotel in Elkins that turned out to have once been a hospital. Chris can't help but point out the obvious, if Buck plans his Vietnam trip the same way he planned his West Virginia adventure, they may never hear from him again. But that's ultimately what makes the conversation work. The episode isn't really about having the perfect plan. It's about finally deciding to go somewhere, experience something new, and figure the rest out along the way. From childhood memories and questionable musical tastes to roadside diners, exhausting jobs, family adventures, and the possibility of riding a motorcycle across Vietnam, Buck's Big Adventure is exactly the kind of wandering conversation that Matters Not was built for.
