Lucas and Luna tackle the mid-career crisis that hits hardest between 35 and 50. Each episode starts with a specific data point — a Bureau of Labor Statistics chart on wage stagnation after 40, a Harvard Business Review study on mid-career 'plateauing,' a real LinkedIn profile of someone who pivoted from engineering to product management at 42. Lucas, a former journalist, frames the macro trends: industry-level hiring patterns, the earnings penalty for changing fields after 35, the psychology of 'sunk cost' in a 15-year career. Luna, a sharp interlocutor with a background in organizational psychology, pushes back with micro-strategies: how to negotiate a lateral move that builds optionality, when to take a certification over a degree, which industries actually value experienced hires. They debate whether 'following your passion' is a privilege of the young or a necessity for the burnout-ridden. They name companies — Microsoft's mid-career apprenticeship program, Amazon's return-to-work

How a 46-Year-Old Negotiated a Promotion by Delaying It
Aug 20, 20265 minS4
In this episode of Mid-Career Moves, Lucas and Luna explore a counterintuitive career strategy: negotiating a promotion by asking to delay it. They dive into the story of a 46-year-old operations manager who, after being offered a director role, requested a six-month delay to complete a critical project and negotiate better terms. The hosts break down why this approach works — it flips the power dynamic, shows strategic thinking, and gives you leverage. They discuss the psychology of delayed gratification, how to structure the conversation, and what to do if your boss says no. If you've ever felt pressured to take a promotion before you're ready — or want to maximize your leverage when you are — this episode offers a fresh playbook. Lucas and Luna also share practical scripts and red flags to watch for. How a 45-Year-Old Broke a Ten-Year Plateau by Changing Teams
Aug 19, 20268 minS4
In episode 160 of Mid-Career Moves, Lucas and Luna explore how an internal team change can break a decade-long salary plateau. They dissect the story of a 45-year-old operations manager who, after ten years of flat pay, moved to a high-visibility project team within the same company and secured a 22% raise within eighteen months. The hosts break down the strategy: identifying stalled roles, building a business case for an internal move, negotiating from a position of retained tenure, and leveraging new skills for a pay bump. They also discuss why internal moves are often overlooked compared to external job switches, and how to time such a move for maximum leverage. Lucas and Luna share practical tips on positioning yourself internally, from shadowing high-impact projects to networking with decision-makers. This episode offers a concrete playbook for mid-career professionals who feel stuck but aren't ready to leave their company. #CareerPlateau #InternalMove #SalaryNegotiation #MidCareer #OperationsManager #CareerStrategy #LateralMove #PayRaise #TenureLeverage #SkillsGrowth #HighVisibility #Mentorship #Networking #CareerGrowth #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #CareerAdvice #JobChange Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How a 45-Year-Old Used a Career Pause to Negotiate a Raise
Aug 18, 202610 minS4
In episode 159, Lucas and Luna explore a counterintuitive career strategy: using a career pause to negotiate a raise. They dive into the story of a 45-year-old marketing director who, after a six-month sabbatical, returned to her employer and successfully negotiated a 15% raise by repositioning her absence as a period of strategic reflection and skill acquisition. Lucas breaks down the psychology behind this move, the importance of framing, and the data on how pauses can impact perceived value. Luna challenges the idea, asking whether it's replicable for those who can't afford a sabbatical, and they discuss alternatives like a 'mini-pause' or a 'career rehearsal' that can achieve similar leverage. They also touch on the broader implications for mid-career professionals who fear that stepping away will derail their trajectory. Tune in for a practical playbook on turning time off into a bargaining chip, with tips on how to prepare, frame, and execute this bold yet calculated move. #CareerPause #SalaryNegotiation #Sabbatical #MidCareer #CareerStrategy #Reinvention #NegotiationTactics #CareerLeverage #MarketingDirector #CareerBreak #TimeOff #SalaryRaise #CareerMoves #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #CareerAdvice #ProfessionalGrowth #WorkLifeBalance Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How a 45-Year-Old Used a Career Saturation Test to Plan a Move
Aug 17, 202610 minS4
In this episode of Mid-Career Moves, Lucas and Luna explore the career saturation test — a practical framework for mid-career professionals who sense they've hit a ceiling but can't pinpoint why. They dissect the story of a 45-year-old operations manager who used the test to realize she wasn't burned out, but under-stimulated: her role had stopped teaching her anything new. By measuring her learning curve, impact, and network growth over the past two years, she identified a lateral move into a supply-chain analytics role that re-engaged her without a pay cut. Lucas breaks down the three signals of saturation — repetitive tasks, no new relationships, and declining curiosity — and how to distinguish it from burnout. Luna shares why the test works better than a gut check, and warns that the fix isn't always a promotion. The episode ends with a quick, actionable way to run the test on your own career this weekend. Whether you're 35 or 55, this episode gives you a clear-eyed way to decide if it's time to stay, shift, or leap. #CareerSaturationTest #MidCareer #CareerStrategy #LateralMove #OperationsManager #SupplyChainAnalytics #LearningCurve #CareerGrowth #BurnoutVsBoredom #CareerPlanning #ProfessionalDevelopment #JobSatisfaction #WorkplaceSkills #Networking #Careers #Business #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How a 48-Year-Old Used a Career Rehearsal to Test a Pivot
Aug 16, 20267 minS4
In this episode of Mid-Career Moves, Lucas and Luna explore a surprisingly effective strategy for testing a major career change without quitting your job: the career rehearsal. Drawing on the story of a 48-year-old marketing director who spent six weeks shadowing a data science team before deciding whether to pivot, they break down what a rehearsal actually looks like, how it differs from a trial or a temp assignment, and why it can save you from a costly mistake. You'll learn how to structure a rehearsal inside your current company, what questions to ask, what to measure, and the signs that a pivot is right or wrong for you. If you've been wondering whether a new path would actually suit you, this episode gives you a practical framework to find out before you leap. #CareerRehearsal #MidCareerPivot #CareersAfter40 #CareerChange #MarketingDirector #DataScience #CareerTesting #LateralMove #CareerStrategy #ProfessionalGrowth #CareerAdvice #WorkLife #Business #Careers #PersonalDevelopment #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #MidCareerMoves Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
