Thrust into the foster care system, Sophia’s mental health quickly deteriorated, ultimately driving her to run away. As a result, she was forced into Vista Maria. There, the trauma only escalated. In one horrifying instance, after Sophia threatened suicide and was taken to the hospital, she returned only to be physically assaulted by Vista Maria staff. As she walked into the building, they violently threw her around and slammed her head against the wall. The abuse didn't end there. In another deeply disturbing incident, Sophia was forcibly heavily sedated—given what the facility called a "booty shot." Under the guise of "safety," she was stripped naked and locked in the Behavior Management Room.
