America's 250th Special Debrief: The Founding Myths We Refuse To Let Die
The paintings are familiar: the Declaration signed on July 4, a united group of elderly Founders, Betsy Ross sewing the first flag, and the Liberty Bell ringing out the birth of a nation. The trouble is, much of that story never happened quite the way we remember it. In this Debrief to The American Experiment Is Haunted, Dyllan examines six of the most deeply embedded myths surrounding the American founding. We look at when the Declaration was really signed, how young and divided many of the Founders actually were, the uncertain origins of the first American flag, the later mythology surrounding the Liberty Bell, George Washington’s fictional cherry tree and very real dental nightmare, and the crucial foreign support that helped the United States win independence. These myths are not simply mistakes. They are part of the national story Americans have told for generations—stories that made the founding cleaner, more heroic, and much less complicated than it really was. The truth does not make the founding less meaningful. It makes it human.
