Control is always abuse when it's people we're talking about and the classic justification (used from time immemorial) is that 'it's for their own good'. It's not really of course - control is always for the benefit of the controller. This is how games work - we don't win to benefit others, we win to benefit ourselves. We don't struggle to achieve an advantageous position in the social hierarchy for the sake of the 'greater good' - although this is what we're inclined to tell ourselves - we're competing for power and power can never be used to benefit others. Taking away freedom is always a malign act...

They couldn't be - to function in society it is necessary that we have loyalty to the group (to the 'tribe') and so to question what we collectively understand to be true would be an act of betrayal .
