The Gift of Meaning
The world has tried for centuries to answer the question of what makes life meaningful, and its best answers are surprisingly bleak. Philosophers like Albert Camus concluded that without God, the only reasonable response to a meaningless universe is defiant self-determination. Just keep pushing the rock up the hill. But Scripture offers something radically different, and the contrast could not be more striking. The Apostle Paul, writing in Ephesians chapter two, does not describe people without Christ as simply lost or broken. He calls them dead. You cannot self-improve your way out of death. You cannot help a corpse reach its potential. That is Paul's honest diagnosis of the human condition apart from Christ, and it is the starting point for understanding why the meaning of life cannot be something you manufacture on your own. The answer to that diagnosis is not a program or a philosophy. It is a Person. God, described in Ephesians as rich in mercy, is not a hostile force waiting to be appeased. He is a Father who is predisposed toward generosity, protection, and love. He gave life to those who were spiritually dead, not because they earned it, but because that is the nature of grace. Just as a newborn contributes nothing to a household and yet receives everything from loving parents, we contributed nothing except our deadness, and God gave us new life anyway. Salvation is a gift, not a paycheck. That truth completely dismantles the idea that God's love for you rises and falls with your performance. So what is the actual meaning of life? Ephesians 2:7 puts it plainly: you exist so that God can point to you throughout all future ages as an example of the incredible wealth of His grace and kindness. You are not a project He is trying to fix. You are exhibit A in the case for His goodness. And Ephesians 2:10 goes further, calling you God's masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus for good works He planned long ago. That means if you have another day, you have another reason to be here. The path forward is not complicated. Start with what you already know from Scripture, take it seriously, and trust that God is more than capable of steering a life that is moving in His direction.
