I’m Esther Bangura the researcher behind the Neurodivergent and Money UK Survey 2025 and a late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman living with ADHD (predominantly inattentive type), dyslexia, and dyspraxia. For years, I was stuck in vicious cycles of debt, emotional overspending, and executive dysfunction. Today, by learning to manage money in a way that works with my brain instead of against it, I’ve been able to pay off debt, regulate my emotions, and finally budget in a way that actually sticks. This podcast is a space for late-diagnosed adults who are tired of financial advice that leaves them feeling ashamed, overwhelmed, or behind. Together, we’ll explore the intersections of neurodiversity, diagnosis, adjustments, age, culture, work, career, business, education, race, and system barriers — because money doesn’t exist in isolation, it’s shaped by every part of who we are and the systems we live in.You can expect a blend of weekly episodes: some with just me sharing research and liv

84 | Neurodivergent Business Owners: Why the Money Side Feels So Much Harder
Aug 31, 202650 min
Self employed money problems rarely announce themselves as money problems. They show up as unsent invoices, a tax bill you have not opened, and one question that keeps coming back. Why is budgeting so hard with irregular income? Neurodivergent business owner finances carry all of that, and a layer underneath it, whether you are ADHD, autistic, dyslexic, dyspraxic or dyscalculic. Because the work has never been the problem. You are good at the work. It is everything sitting behind it, and the low hum of anxiety that never fully switches off. This episode explains why the money side of running a business is so much harder for a neurodivergent brain, and gives you three moves that make it easier without asking you to try harder. Esther Bangura, financial coach for neurodivergent adults, looks at income and why it behaves so differently the moment you work for yourself. When you leave employment you lose the scaffolding that was quietly running your executive function for you. The payroll date. The deadlines. The manager. The rhythm of the week. What replaces it is irregular income that breaks every standard budgeting method, a tax bill sitting months away on a deadline your brain cannot see, business admin with no dopamine and no due date, and two sets of money bleeding into each other. She also names the pattern almost nobody says out loud: overworking as a money strategy. Earning more so you never have to sit down and look. It works, until the margin shrinks. The message underneath all of it is the same. You are not bad at business. Running a business asks for the exact functions neurodivergence makes hardest. In this episode Why the money side falls apart when you go self employed, and what actually happens to your finances the day the structure disappears Why irregular income breaks the advice you have been given, why business admin never gets done, and why overworking to avoid the numbers is a fragile system rather than security Three moves that hold: separate the money before you budget anything, pay yourself a fixed amount so irregular income becomes regular at the point it reaches you, and stop asking your memory to be the system Links and resources Free live workshop, The Five Money Mistakes Neurodivergent Adults Make. Budgeting has never stuck, and after a summer of travel, eating out, birthdays and days out, September is arriving with its hand out. Back to school costs. Travelling into work again. Renewals you forgot were annual. In this episode of Neurodivergent Money Management, Esther Bangura gives you the exact budgeting system she uses with every one to one client: seven categories, and no more. She explains why thirty category budgeting apps fail neurodivergent brains, why the category count itself is the barrier and not your discipline, and what actually belongs in each of the seven. You will hear why Pay Yourself First is the category almost everybody drops, what Esther's own £700 month of unplanned spending revealed about money sitting in an account with no job attached to it, and how to build the whole thing this week with nothing more than a notebook, a pencil and a calculator. Your brain is not the problem. The system was never built for it, and a simpler one is genuinely possible. In this episode Why thirty budgeting categories is thirty decisions, and what that costs an ADHD, autistic, dyslexic, dyspraxic or dyscalculic brain The seven categories in order, with the one rule that ends the "is this priority or variable" argument for good What £700 of unplanned spending in a single month revealed, and the rule that stops surprises being surprises Links and resources Free live workshop, Five Money Mistakes Neurodivergent Adults Are Making, and how to build a solid financial foundation, the neurodivergent way. 82 | ADHD and Income: Why Money Feels Tighter This Year, Even on a Good Salary
Aug 24, 202634 min
Your income has not dropped. You are on a good salary. And your money is still disappearing faster than it used to, and you cannot say where it went. The cost of living squeeze is real, it is measurable, and it does not land on an ADHD brain the way it lands on everybody else. In this episode of Neurodivergent Money Management, Esther Bangura looks at what is really happening to household costs in the UK and the US in 2026, including the frozen tax thresholds quietly taking more of every pay rise. Then she gets to the part nobody explains: why the cost of living squeeze compounds for ADHD brains, from the convenience spending that is actually holding your week together, to the fact that every saving available to you right now requires exactly the executive function you have least of. You will leave with four things you can do at low capacity, and a clear reason to stop carrying this alone. Highlights Why the pay rise did not feel like a pay rise, and what frozen tax thresholds have to do with it The convenience premium reframe: why cutting the takeaways and taxis can cost you more than it saves The one admin session that could be worth hundreds, and why it suits an ADHD brain Your next step If today landed, come and sit with Esther for an hour. 81 Burnout Proof Your Money: The Neurodivergent System That Keeps Your Bills Paid When Your Capacity Hits Zero
Aug 19, 202635 min
Burnout is going to come back. That is not pessimism, it is what the research shows, with nearly half of autistic adults in one study reporting burnout four or more times. So the useful question is not how to stop burning out. It is what keeps running when you cannot. In this episode Esther builds a money system designed to survive a low capacity month. She shares the four foundations that make automation actually work, why everybody tells you to automate and it still falls apart, and the four part architecture that keeps your bills paid, your savings funded and your debt going down when you have nothing left to give. She also covers burnout across neurotypes, including what the research says about ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia, and what one burnout episode can genuinely cost you in the UK and the US. Highlights The six week test that tells you instantly whether your money system is burnout proof Why automation fails without four things underneath it, and what those four things are What burnout actually costs, from a £12 late fee to six years on your credit file Resources mentioned Free live workshop, Five Money Mistakes Neurodivergent Adults Make, Tuesday 15 September, 7pm UK: estherbangura.com/workshop PocketSmith, the budgeting app Esther uses: PocketSmith Affiliate link One to one coaching: estherbangura.com/coaching Leave me an audio review at estherbangura.com/ask Your next step Set up one automation today that removes one recurring money decision permanently. 80 | How I Paid Off £18K of Debt as a Neurodivergent Woman (And What I Wish I'd Known Sooner)
Aug 17, 202613 min
For years, Esther couldn't understand why nothing stuck. Not the budgets, not the discipline, not the advice everyone else swore by. It wasn't a discipline problem, it was a format problem, she was running a neurotypical money system on a neurodivergent brain, and that was never going to hold. In this episode, she shares the real story behind her £18k debt, the financial adviser and the debt charity who both turned her away, and the diagnosis that finally explained why nothing had stuck. If you're neurodivergent and money has felt like an uphill battle no matter how hard you try, this is why, and it's also exactly why an ND friendly money system changes everything. Esther teaches how to build one, live, in her free workshop, 5 Money Mistakes Neurodivergent Adults Make, and this episode is where to start. Highlights Why two different services refused to help her, and what she built instead The diagnosis that made years of trying so hard, and still failing, finally make sense Why the same brain that got her into debt is the exact same one that got her out CTA Register for the free workshop, 5 Money Mistakes Neurodivergent Adults Make: estherbangura.com/workshop Free live workshop, Tuesday 15 September, 7pm UK / 2pm EDT / 1pm CDT.
