Episode #43
143 Should
"Should" comes with baggage, and Cara has a whole mythology around it plus a catchphrase she uses constantly: don't should on yourself. So Kimberly takes it somewhere else entirely, starting with the fact that should and cough sit on the page pretending to follow a rule, and Cara asking to see the credentials of whoever decided. Which is how they land on the definition that runs the rest of the episode. Should turns out to be about permission, and about who granted themselves the authority to hand it out. From there it is cursive as a lost tool, the books of different handwritings Cara kept in high school so she could embody different selves, the gmail AI that popped up mid-email offering to polish Kimberly's writing for her and Kimberly's proposal that the next moneymaker for attorneys is going to be NDAs, because if she gets a smart house, that house is signing one. Cara's is-this-just-me example brings it home. She goes at blackberry brambles barefoot and bare-handed on purpose, which makes no sense from the outside until you hear about the kid who made a tunnel through one to reach a friend. She will should herself into that fight all day long. For everybody else, it has to be a could.
