S5E9 Visions of Africa w/ Touki Bouki (1963) & The Long Ships (64)
Associate producer of DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST (1991) and legendary film programmer FLOYD WEBB is back on the podcast with a pair of movies set in Africa, but only one of them is filmed there. It shouldn't be too hard to guess which one. First, Mory and Anta, a pair of young lovers dream of leaving the dusty streets of Dakar in Senegal for their fantasies of Paris in TOUKI BOUKI (1973). Director Djibril Diop Mambéty's visual masterpiece starts out hyper realistic but becomes more hallucinatory as Mory and Anta plan their escape. Emergency guest host Darren Norris says that it feels like somebody is telling you their dream. The image of Mory and Anta riding on a motorcycle with a zebu steer skull attached to the handlebars was recreated by Beyoncé and Jay-Z to promote their 2018 world tour and the movie was named the 66th greatest film of all time on Sight and Sound's Critic's Poll in 2022. Streaming on Criterion and HBOMax. Then Richard Widmark is a Viking conman and Sidney Poitier is a Moorish King and their both after "The Mother of All Voices," a bell made with half of the gold in all the world, in THE LONG SHIPS (1964), an historical epic that's a little heavy on the cheese while being groundbreaking in actually having a Black person portray the ruler of an empire. Directed by Jack Cardiff, the master of Technicolor who was the director of photography of Powell and Pressberger's visual feasts THE RED SHOES (1948), A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (46), and BLACK NARCISSUS (47) along with John Huston's THE AFRICAN QUEEN (51). Hey, he also shot Rambo and Conan sequels in the 80s. Also starring Russ Tamblyn in Viking hotpants and Rosanna Schiaffino in the outfit that inspired Princess Leia's geddup from RETURN OF THE JEDI. Streaming on tubi. Philena couldn't make it becasue she can't deal with the animal snuff no matter how artfully filmed the graphic slaughter of goats and steers may be, and her dad Greg is on assignment, but so they sent their cousin DARREN NORRIS from the CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE podcast as an emergency guest host! Thanks Darren! CULTURAL FUTURES EXCHANGE does deep dives into pop culture artifacts. Darren and his co-host Jeff recently did a two part episode on the PHANTASM film series that you can listen to pay tribute to REGGIE BANNISTER, everyone's favorite undead-fighting icecream man from all five Phantasm films.
