The Neuroscience of Envy & Jealousy: Comparison, Social Pain & Self-Compassion with Dr. D'Marti Burgos
Aug 18, 202652 min
Why does someone else's success sometimes feel painful? Why do envy and jealousy seem to appear before we even have time to think? And what if these emotions aren't signs that something is wrong with us—but ancient survival mechanisms designed to keep us connected? In this episode of Perspective Shifts for Healing with The Hanged Woman, host Julienne Irons sits down with physician and neuroscience expert Dr. D'Marti Burgos to explore the fascinating science behind comparison, envy, jealousy, belonging, and self-compassion. Together, they unpack why social rejection activates the same brain regions as physical pain, how comparison shaped human evolution, why social media amplifies our stress response, and how understanding what's happening in the brain can help us respond with curiosity instead of shame. If you've ever wondered why comparison feels so automatic—or how to stop getting stuck in it—this episode offers one of the most practical scientific explanations you'll hear. In this episode, we discuss: Why envy and jealousy evolved to help us survive The surprising purpose behind comparison Upward vs. downward comparison How social media changes the way our brains compare Why social rejection literally hurts The neuroscience behind schadenfreude Benign envy vs. malicious envy Why chronic comparison rewires the brain Practical ways to interrupt comparison loops How gratitude, mindfulness, self-compassion, and community reshape our nervous systems Timestamps 00:00 Welcome and Setup 01:14 Branding Agency Break 02:13 Why Envy and Jealousy Exist 03:53 Jealousy as a Survival Mechanism 06:07 Envy and Self-Improvement 06:41 What Happens in the Brain During Comparison 07:08 The Hidden Danger of Downward Comparison 10:07 Humanizing the "Out Group" 12:42 Why Upward Comparison Hurts 15:20 How Authenticity Closes the Comparison Gap 16:18 Why Humans Naturally Compare 17:19 Comparison, Evolution & Belonging 20:01 Why We Compare Ourselves to Similar People 22:20 The iPhone Example: Social Belonging in Action 24:10 The Three-Step Brain Response to Envy 25:42 Why Envy Feels Like Physical Pain 26:48 Healing After Loss Sponsor Break 27:48 Branding Perspective Shift 28:27 The Neuroscience of Schadenfreude 30:52 Guilt, Shame & Automatic Reactions 32:43 Benign vs. Malicious Envy 37:40 How Chronic Comparison Rewires the Brain 40:21 Evidence-Based Ways to Interrupt Comparison 42:53 Gratitude, Meditation & Self-Compassion 46:23 Why Social Connection Is the Antidote 47:56 Final Perspective Shift & Closing Thoughts Connect with us Instagram: @3ofCupsHealing Website: 3ofcupshealing.com ✨ Learn more about 3 of Cups Heart-Centered Marketing https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/ ✨ Learn more about our Healing After Loss course https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/halcourse Connect with Dr. D’Marti Burgos here Website: www.Dmartiburgos.com Instagram: @dr.curlz Email: behappy@dmartiburgos.com https://www.youtube.com/@dmartiburgos
Money, Comparison & Values: Reclaiming Your Definition of Success with Leah Hadley
Aug 11, 202639 min
Have you ever looked around and felt like everyone else was somehow ahead of you? Whether it's buying a home, building wealth, growing a business, or reaching a career milestone, comparison around money can quietly convince us we're falling behind. In Part 2 of our Envy & Jealousy series, host Julienne Irons sits down with financial therapist and wealth advisor Leah Hadley to explore why money becomes such a powerful measuring stick for our self-worth—and why it doesn't have to. Together they unpack how life transitions can shake our confidence, why wealth often looks very different than we assume, and how defining success through your own values can free you from chasing someone else's timeline. In this episode, you'll learn: Why feeling "behind" is often based on comparison—not reality The difference between the appearance of wealth and actual financial freedom Why money is neutral—and how we assign meaning to it How major life transitions impact confidence and financial decisions How to identify when you're climbing someone else's ladder A practical exercise to align your spending with your values Why your definition of success may deserve a second look Timestamps 00:00 Why We Feel Behind Around Money 01:22 3 of Cups Healing Sponsor 02:16 Meet Financial Therapist Leah Hadley 04:16 Rebuilding Confidence After Life Transitions 06:52 The Hidden Meaning Behind Feeling "Behind" 08:47 Homeownership, Timelines & Social Pressure 11:38 The Difference Between Looking Wealthy and Being Wealthy 14:09 Are You Climbing Someone Else's Ladder? 17:22 Money, Identity & Major Life Changes 20:35 Midroll Break 22:30 Grieving the Life You Thought You'd Have 24:12 Rebuilding Trust After Financial Setbacks 26:53 Values-Based Money Decisions 29:05 Reducing Comparison Triggers 30:24 Redefining Success on Your Own Terms 35:31 Leah's Empowered Sisterhood 38:02 Julienne's Takeaway & Next Week's Science Episode Connect with us Instagram: @3ofCupsHealing Website: 3ofcupshealing.com ✨ Learn more about 3 of Cups Heart-Centered Marketing https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/ ✨ Learn more about our Healing After Loss course https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/halcourse Connect with Leah Hadley here Website: https://intentionalwealthpartners.com/ Substack: Intentional Money YouTube: Intentional Money Moves
Comparison, Shame & the Nervous System: Finding Your Values with Therapist Jillian Blank
Aug 6, 202639 min
Why do we compare ourselves to other people? And why can someone else's success sometimes make us question our own worth? In the first episode of our Envy & Jealousy series, host Julienne Irons sits down with licensed marriage and family therapist Jillian Blank to explore the psychology of comparison, the role of shame, and how our nervous system influences the stories we tell ourselves. Jillian explains why comparison isn't simply a social media problem. Instead, it's deeply connected to our need for safety, belonging, and the early experiences that shaped our identity. She introduces the concept of the Window of Tolerance, discusses how trauma and nervous system dysregulation fuel unhealthy comparison, and shares practical tools for recognizing when we're acting from fear instead of our authentic values. Throughout the conversation, Julienne reflects on her own experiences with comparison in the entertainment industry, leading to a powerful realization about pursuing someone else's version of success versus honoring her own. In this episode you'll learn: Why comparison is a normal human survival response How childhood conditioning and ancestral patterns influence self-worth What the Window of Tolerance is and why it matters The difference between comparison driven by shame and comparison inspired by values How to identify your own "inner critic" and interrupt anxious thought loops Practical nervous system tools for responding to comparison with compassion Why curiosity is more healing than self-criticism 00:00 Welcome Back Seekers 00:36 Comparison as a Signal 01:33 Business and Branding Break 02:32 Meet Therapist Jillian 04:02 Reading Not Enough 05:46 Why We Compare 07:02 Roots Before Social Media 08:26 Childhood Conditioning 09:34 Values Change the Lens 13:54 Window of Tolerance 16:35 Nervous System and Fear 18:20 Inspired or Afraid 23:32 Midroll Break 25:26 Compassionate Starting Point 30:10 Interrupting the Cycle 32:46 What Comparison Says 35:19 Key Perspective Shift 36:35 Where to Find Jillian 37:18 Closing Reflections and Next Week Connect with us Instagram: @3ofCupsHealing Website: 3ofcupshealing.com ✨ Learn more about 3 of Cups Heart-Centered Marketing https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/ ✨ Learn more about our Healing After Loss course https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/halcourse Connect with Jillian Blank here https://jillianblank.com Zen Care: https://zencare.co/provider/therapist/jillian-blank?state=california

Happiness as a Frequency: Clearing Static & Finding Joy with Raquel Veisaga (Re-Release)
Jul 21, 20261h 15m
As part of the summer relaunch of Perspective Shifts for Healing with The Hanged Woman (formerly The Hanged Woman Podcast), host Julienne Irons re-releases this inspiring conversation with transformational coach Raquel Veisaga. What if happiness isn't something you chase... What if it's something that's been there all along, hidden beneath the noise? Raquel introduces the idea of "static"—the fears, stories, survival patterns, and meanings we assign to life's challenges that pull us away from our natural state of joy. Together, she and Julienne explore heart-brain coherence, nervous system regulation, breathwork, meditation, journaling, and the power of redefining the blueprint we've inherited for what happiness is supposed to look like. If you've ever felt like life keeps getting in the way of your happiness, this conversation offers a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest shift isn't changing your circumstances—it's changing the meaning you give them. Whether you're listening for the first time or revisiting this episode with fresh ears, you'll walk away with practical tools for quieting the static and reconnecting with your own inner frequency. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Welcome & Happiness Series 01:13 Three of Cups Healing 02:13 Meet Raquel Veisaga 04:47 What Is "Static"? 07:19 Happiness as a Frequency 09:10 Healing Through Reframing 12:09 Heart-Brain Coherence 18:30 Your Happiness Blueprint 22:39 Purpose vs. Presence 27:09 Where Science Meets Spirit 33:02 Redefining Happiness 36:13 Midroll 38:07 Recognizing Life's Static 38:49 Scarcity vs. Abundance 40:03 Embodying Presence 42:35 Why Breath Changes Everything 46:23 Using Breath During Crisis 50:04 Releasing Fear 54:20 Staying Happy During Chaos 59:05 Heart-Mind Coherence 01:02:08 The ARCHIE Framework 01:08:03 Human • Superhuman • Divinity 01:10:38 Defining Happiness 01:13:22 Closing Reflection Connect with us Instagram: @3ofCupsHealing Website: 3ofcupshealing.com ✨ Learn more about 3 of Cups Heart-Centered Marketing https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/ ✨ Learn more about our Healing After Loss course https://www.3ofcupshealing.com/halcourse Connect with Raquel Veisaga here: https://www.v-saga.com/ Insta: @ _vsaga , @bodyrituals , @vsaga.peaceandhappiness YouTube: V-Saga (323)307-7529 createalifeyoulove@v-saga.com
