The Sleepless Ones_ The Book of Enoch and the Angels Who Wrote the First Crime Report
The Book of Enoch is one of the strangest documents in religious history: a Second Temple Jewish text that tells the story Genesis skipped, where 200 "Watchers" swear an oath on Mount Hermon, descend to earth, and teach humanity the knowledge heaven meant to keep. In this episode, we go through the text itself: the descent, the giants, the roster of archangels and their jurisdictions, the "angels of the Presence," the 364-day calendar delivered by Uriel, and the origin story of demons as the leftover spirits of an angelic crime. We also correct the myth of the tidy "nine orders of angels," which does not come from Enoch at all. Then we follow how the book was starved out of Western Christianity, why it stayed alive in Ethiopia for fifteen hundred years, and how a vain, exaggerating Scottish explorer named James Bruce carried the complete text to Europe in 1773, and why nobody believed him. Along the way: Jude, Tertullian's very strange Noah argument, the Dead Sea Scrolls, a scapegoat that may be an angel, John Dee's century-early obsession with a book he couldn't read, and an explorer who survived a civil war and died on a staircase. This is the first of a two-part descent into the architecture of the unseen. Next: what happened to the spirits of the giants.
