Sunscreen or Skip Everything Else
I have known Jen Rowell for 12 years, which means she has had her hands on my face for the whole of my own midlife. So when I asked her what she sees happening to women's skin in their forties and fifties, she did not hand me a list of products. She started underneath. Oil production drops and cell turnover slows way down, and her image for the rest of it is that the face starts making its way down while the bone structure stays exactly where it was. Then she named the thing most of us get wrong, which is that we keep buying the newest item on the shelf instead of the two that do the work. We went through her actual routine in order, and it is calmer than the skincare aisle wants you to believe. At night, an oil cleanse, a second cleanse, a growth factor, a retinoid, then something to seal it in. In the morning, a lactic acid cleanser, vitamin C, eye cream and sunscreen. We also got into what happens in the treatment room, from dermaplaning to red and blue light, and why she thinks the most underrated thing about a facial is that somebody makes you lie still for an hour. Self-care is not selfish. And when I asked what makes her feel her hottest, she said gratitude, and the way she said it has stayed with me. - - - - - About the Guest: Jen Rowell is an esthetician with 30 years behind the treatment table and a partner at Glow Skin & Body Care in San Mateo, California, a practice she and three partners have run for twenty-two years. Glow has been voted Best Facial and Waxing Salon in San Mateo more than once. Her work runs from the classic European facial to dermaplaning, peels, hydrodermabrasion, LED light therapy and gua sha lymphatic massage. She is a hands-on practitioner in the most literal sense, and she will tell you her hands do more than any machine in the room. She is candid about what a treatment can and cannot do, and she would rather talk you through the two products you actually need than send you home with twelve. Thirty years in, she works on clients she met before their weddings, then through their pregnancies, and now on their daughters.
