The lockdown has been lifted, but the investigation is just beginning. Virginia State University students and staff woke up to the news of gunfire on campus just after 1:28 a.m. Saturday. Chesterfield County Police, working with VSU campus police, the ATF, and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, report five victims suffering gunshot wounds near the dorms. All five were transported to area hospitals. Four sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One remains in critical condition. This is the second shooting on a Virginia college campus this year, following the earlier incident at Old Dominion University. VSU, a public historically Black land-grant university founded in 1882 and home to roughly 5,800 students, sits just across the Appomattox River from Petersburg and about 25 minutes south of Richmond. The campus community has been urged to continue avoiding the residential area and follow all law enforcement directions. No arrests have been announced.   Spanberger Held This Data Center Water Warning for 6 Months

  Virginia’s groundwater is under real pressure east of Richmond, and a long-delayed state report just confirmed it. Even modest data centers could exceed aquifer capacity in most of the region. Uriah Kiser breaks down the new Virginia Department of Environmental Quality study on data centers and the Coastal Plain aquifer system. The report, due out in January but released only recently after more than six months, finds that aquifers east of Interstate 95 lack the capacity for significant new groundwater withdrawals. Modeling showed that a 100-megawatt data center — small by today’s standards — would exceed available groundwater in most locations. Only one site, near Kilmarnock on the Northern Neck, showed enough capacity under the scenarios tested. Withdrawals in one county can lower water levels dozens of miles away. A proposed site in James City County near Williamsburg, for example, could affect levels in Caroline County 68 miles away and Henrico County 77 miles away. The system is connected. The DEQ recommends that lawmakers strengthen the agency’s authority to deny groundwater permits when surface water, reservoirs, or recycled water are reasonably available, or when withdrawals would drop levels too far. The Data Center Coalition pushed back, noting that data centers account for less than 0.5% of statewide water withdrawals and use less than several other industries. Still, the report’s findings raise hard questions about future development east of Richmond and how Virginia balances economic growth with long-term water security. Governor Abigail Spanberger’s office released the report to the Associated Press after months of delays, attributing the holdup to a backlog from the prior administration.   Fauci’s Silence: COVID Policies Still Haunt Virginia Families

Dr. Anthony Fauci sat before the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee today and refused to answer a single question — invoking his Fifth Amendment right more than 100 times. The man who once pushed policies that made it harder to go to work, harder to go to school, and harder to live normal life now faces Senate Chairman Rand Paul under subpoena and offers only silence. Uriah Kiser breaks down the full hearing, the most intense exchanges, and what it still means for Virginia families six years later. Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was subpoenaed by Sen. Rand Paul. In his opening statement he accused Paul of an “obvious obsession” and said the only reason he was called was so Paul could try to put him “behind bars.” Then he took the Fifth on everything — emails, his personal diary, gain-of-function research, the Wuhan lab, celebrity status, and whether his unconditional pardon from President Joe Biden (dating all the way back to January 1, 2014) would be jeopardized by lying to Congress. One of the most powerful moments came when Sen. Bernie Moreno confronted Fauci with the story of a family arrested and dragged out of a high school football stadium simply for sitting outside without masks. Moreno asked Fauci directly what happened to that mother and her family. Fauci’s only reply: “On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.” He repeated that line over and over while people who lived through the policies sat behind him. Virginia felt those policies early and hard. The Commonwealth was among the first states to close schools and kept many shuttered for nearly two years. Students lost critical developmental years. Families were barred from hospital rooms. The host shares how those same rules kept him from seeing his own wife when she was seriously ill. The effects of the school closures and isolation still linger across the state. Rand Paul ended the hearing by warning Fauci there will be repercussions for his refusal to testify and scheduled a contempt vote.
