<p>Progress is usually pictured as escape.</p><p>We solve a problem, remove a limitation, and become freer than we were before.</p><p>But every durable solution has another side.</p><p>A bridge solves the problem of crossing a river, then cities grow around the bridge. A standard solves incompatibility, then thousands of systems depend on the standard. An institution solves a coordination problem, then livelihoods, rules, habits, and expectations accumulate around it.
