Golf Special - Stop Thinking And Start Swinging
The fastest way to lose your swing can be trying to “fix” it while you’re standing over the ball. I’m Coach B, and I’m talking directly to golfers, junior players, college athletes, pros, plus the parents and coaches who live in the pressure cooker right alongside them. If you’ve ever felt your body get tight, your mind get loud, and your putting stroke suddenly feel foreign, there’s a reason, and it’s not a character flaw. We dig into what performance science says about overthinking and pressure, including classic findings on self-focus and what golf research calls reinvestment: reaching back for technical rules and consciously controlling a movement that works best on autopilot. I also break down why golf is basically built to trigger this problem. It’s self-paced, the ball is still, the round is long, and there’s endless time to replay mistakes and predict consequences. That’s why the yips can show up for so many serious golfers, living on a spectrum from anxiety-driven choking to deeper movement disruption. Then we get practical. I explain overreaching as intensity plus technique obsession, and why shifting from an internal focus (body parts) to an external focus (club, target, start line, ball flight) can stabilize performance. I also share my developing doctoral frameworks: Environmental Identity Conditioning (EIC), which looks at how a golf-only environment can make each shot feel like a threat to identity, and neuroplastic complementary training, a proactive approach that puts athletes into low-stakes “beginner” situations so their brain and sense of self can expand beyond the scorecard. If you want fewer swing thoughts and more trust under pressure, hit play, share this with a golfer who needs it, and subscribe, rate, and review so more players can stop thinking and start swinging.
