Episode #228
Forgive Yourself and Let It Go
Forgiveness sounds simple until you're the one who has been hurt—or you're trying to forgive yourself. In this episode of Quest for Success Podcast , we look at what it really means to let go without pretending the pain never happened. You'll discover the psychology behind forgiveness, including psychologist Everett Worthington's REACH model , a research-supported approach for working through hurt and resentment. ( PubMed ) We'll also explore the important difference between guilt and shame and why recognizing "I did something wrong" is very different from believing "there is something wrong with me." ( ScienceDirect ) We'll talk about forgiving others, forgiving yourself, and why forgiveness doesn't automatically mean reconciliation, restored trust, or allowing someone to hurt you again. We'll also look at forgiveness through a Christian lens and ask a harder question: What are you still carrying that may be time to put down? This isn't about forgetting your past. It's about deciding how much power your past gets over what happens next. The REACH model provides practical steps for working through forgiveness. Healthy guilt can push us to repair a mistake; shame can turn the mistake into a judgment about who we are. Forgiving someone doesn't require rebuilding trust or restoring an unhealthy relationship. Self-forgiveness means accepting responsibility, learning, making amends when possible, and allowing yourself to move forward. For Christians, forgiveness is also rooted in the forgiveness and grace God extends to us.
