RAA Talks
Season-2, Episode-11: Harassment, Job Loss, Rejection and Self-Worth
"You're not the smartest person in the room. But you're essential." - Lisa Vangsness In this episode of #RAATalksPodcast, I sit down with Lisa Vangsness, a human factors expert and statistician whose work has reached places like NASA and the U.S. Army. Join me as we talk about imposter syndrome, being a connector, and what it really means to bring value without needing to be the loudest voice in the room. In this episode, Lisa shares insights on: Why imposter syndrome shows up even in highly specialized, high-level work How being a "connector" can be a real professional strength What changed when she moved into a more relationship-driven work culture Why balcony people matter when you're trying to see yourself clearly How to zoom out from self-doubt and focus on the mission One of my favorite parts of this conversation was Lisa's reminder that we don't always need to be the smartest person in the room. Sometimes, the person who can bridge ideas, respect expertise, and help the whole team move forward is the one making the biggest difference. She also opened up about a painful workplace assault and the courage it took to name it, report it, and move forward without letting it define the rest of her life. She uses her expertise to guide use-inspired research on human-technology interaction (e.g., autonomous and artificially intelligent systems; AS/AIS) for organizations such as NASA, the US Air Force, and the US Army. Her projects exist at the intersection of human factors, metacognition, and theory of mind, answering questions and solving problems about humans’ representation of technology within the context of human-technology teams. She is also the co-inventor of the Linguistic Fingerprint, a statistical method for instantly capturing the attitudes and beliefs implicitly conveyed in written text, and has served as a statistical consultant on more than a dozen projects.
