Episode #27
Told to Manage Stress? What Caregivers Can Actually Do in Five Minutes
Sep 30, 20261h 1mS3
What if “manage your stress” came with practical support that actually fit caregiver life? In this episode of Nervous System Reset for Caregivers , Michelle speaks with Melissa Lewis-Duarte, PhD, NBC-HWC, stress management and resilience coach, psychologist and creator of the Take Five Framework . Together, they explore what happens when caregivers hold everything together in appointments, hospital wards, service meetings and difficult conversations—only to crash afterwards. Melissa shares from both professional and lived experience, including a traumatic birth, her child’s six-month NICU stay, medical trauma and the long-term effects of chronic stress. This is a compassionate conversation about why your body may keep reacting even after the hard room has ended. You’ll learn how five-minute practices can support your nervous system without requiring a perfect routine, a full hour of self-care or extra capacity you simply don’t have. In this episode, we discuss: Why caregivers can feel “fine” during a crisis and fall apart afterwards How chronic stress can show up physically and emotionally Why “manage your stress” is incomplete advice without practical support The five pathways of Melissa’s Take Five Framework Physical, cognitive, emotional, purposeful and organisational practices How to choose one small practice that fits your current capacity Using breathwork and sensory cues before or after a hard appointment Supporting caregivers who experience rumination and replay Expressive writing after difficult medical or service-system conversations Habit stacking and using existing moments as gentle reminders Why consistency matters more than perfection The importance of play, joy and meaningful connection How to reduce the mental load with one small organisational change Why caregivers are already doing enough Melissa reminds caregivers that they don’t have to use all five pathways at once. You can choose the one that feels most supportive today and begin with five minutes—or less. This episode is for education and support only. It is not medical advice or a substitute for individual care. When Girls Mask: What Caregivers Need to Know About Autism and ADHD
Sep 28, 20261h 12mS3
What happens when one question finally gets answered—and suddenly a hundred more appear? In this caregiver-to-caregiver conversation, Michelle speaks with Greer Jones, creator of The Unfinished Idea and founder of the Beautifully Wired Summit , about autism and ADHD in girls and women. Together, they explore why neurodivergence can be missed or misunderstood in girls, how masking can hide signs for years, and what caregivers may notice first—from after-school shutdowns and emotional overwhelm to intense interests, friendship changes, decision fatigue and burnout. Greer also shares what it can feel like to receive a diagnosis later in life, or to hear that your child is autistic or has ADHD. The relief, grief, confusion and new questions can all arrive at once. This episode offers practical, compassionate support for caregivers navigating: Autism and ADHD in girls and women The emotional load of caregiving Decision fatigue and daily overwhelm Body doubling and finding your people Supporting the caregiver’s nervous system Advocating in school meetings and hard appointments Seeing the whole child—not just the challenges Creating a more regulated home without expecting perfection Taking small, manageable steps after diagnosis Finding community without doing everything perfectly Greer explains how the Beautifully Wired Summit is designed as a gentle place to land. The free three-day online summit includes more than 20 speakers across the themes of understanding, supporting and celebrating autism and ADHD in girls and women. Sessions are available to watch free for 48 hours, with a private Facebook community for connection and support. Whether you’re raising a neurodivergent child, exploring your own diagnosis, or supporting someone you love, this episode is a reminder that you don’t have to navigate the maze alone. Sep 23, 20261 hourS3
If you’re an adult child caring for an ageing parent while also managing work, family, appointments, admin, and your own emotional load, this episode is for you. In this guest episode of Nervous System Reset for Caregivers , Michelle speaks with Wendy Adlerstein , a licensed social worker with nearly 30 years of experience in ageing and home care. Wendy shares what she sees when adult children first reach out: exhaustion, racing thoughts, disrupted sleep, isolation, guilt, and the feeling that caregiving has quietly become a second full-time job. Together, Michelle and Wendy explore the calm first step when you don’t know where to begin, how to plan before a crisis, how to speak with ageing parents about support, and how to find ethical home care that protects dignity and independence. What you’ll learn The quiet signs that an adult child caregiver is carrying too much Why caregiving can quickly become isolating How to recognise when outside support is needed Why planning ahead can reduce crisis pressure How to introduce home care without making your parent feel they are losing control How to assess whether a support agency is safe, reliable, and well-managed Why predictable support can protect caregiver capacity How family members can divide responsibilities and work as a team A simple grounding reset before a difficult conversation Why self-care can begin with small, repeatable moments Gentle note This conversation includes dementia, ageing, caregiver overwhelm, loss of independence, and family stress. Caregiver Inclusion in Medical Care: Your Voice Belongs in the Plan
Sep 21, 202633 minS3
What if the person with the most information about your loved one is the person the medical system is least designed to include? In this solo episode of Nervous System Reset for Caregivers , Michelle explores caregiver inclusion in medical care — why it matters, what happens when caregivers are excluded, and what genuinely collaborative healthcare could look like. Caregivers hold the 24-hour lived experience: the patterns, changes, warning signs, medication responses, videos, photographs, and details that may never appear in a 10-minute appointment or clinical report. Yet many caregivers are treated as background support rather than essential members of the care team. In this episode, Michelle explores: The credibility gap between caregiver knowledge and clinical observations How poor handovers and fragmented systems affect continuity of care Why caregivers are often asked to prove what they already know The emotional and nervous system cost of being dismissed in hard rooms What genuine caregiver inclusion could look and feel like Why caregiver expertise should be part of the formal care plan How to document observations, questions, and agreed next steps Collaborative language that can reduce defensiveness in appointments Why caregiver inclusion improves outcomes for families and healthcare systems A practical sentence to use before your next appointment Your next small step Before your next appointment, write one collaborative sentence and practise saying it once: “I’d like to make sure we leave with a clear plan.” You can also add: “I have some observations from home that I’d like included in the record.” Your lived experience matters. You are not an interruption to the care team. You are part of it. Family Caregiver Advocacy: What to Do When Support Systems Stall
Sep 16, 202659 minS3
If you’re a caregiver who feels like you’re doing all the coordination, calling, chasing, documenting, and repeating your story — while the system still feels stalled — this episode is for you. In this guest episode of Nervous System Reset for Caregivers , Michelle speaks with Michael W. Mackniak , an attorney with 30 years of experience in the mental health space and the founder of care coordination models including Care Coalition and the Guardian model . Together, they explore the cracks in mental health and community support systems, what families can do when communication breaks down, and how caregivers can advocate without sacrificing their own nervous system, health, and capacity. What you’ll learn Why communication is one of the biggest gaps in mental health support systems How fragmented services affect caregivers and the whole family What effective care coordination looks like in practice Why caregivers need to be included as part of the care team How to respond when systems stall, providers don’t communicate, or follow-up disappears Why a care coordination snapshot can reduce mental load How siblings, partners, and extended family can support without taking over Why boundaries are a form of protection, not punishment How to ask for specific help instead of carrying everything alone Why keeping a clear timeline and record can strengthen medical advocacy Gentle note This episode includes mental illness, caregiver stress, family strain, systems that can feel overwhelming, and advocacy challenges. Please listen in a way that feels supportive for you. This conversation is general education and support, not legal, medical, or mental health advice. Your practical next step Create one note called Care Coordination Snapshot and write three lines: What is happening right now? What do we need next? Who is responsible for the next step? You don’t need a perfect system. You need one place to begin.
