On Trial: Bring It On (2000)
Tonight we put Bring It On starring Kirsten Dunst, ON TRIAL! Released in 2000, *Bring It On* marked the theatrical directing debut of Peyton Reed from a script by Jessica Bendinger. Dunst stars alongside Eliza Dushku, Jesse Bradford and Gabrielle Union in the story of rival high-school cheerleading teams preparing to battle for a national championship. Originally pitched as *Cheer Fever*—“*Clueless* meets *Strictly Ballroom*” at a cheerleading competition—the film combined Bendinger’s fascination with ESPN cheer competitions and her background covering hip-hop for *Spin*. That experience inspired the movie’s central conflict: what if America’s championship cheerleading squad had built its success by stealing routines from another team? After being rejected 28 times, the project finally landed at Beacon Pictures. The result opened at number one, held the spot for two weeks, grossed roughly $90 million worldwide and became a cult classic that spawned six direct-to-video sequels. But 26 years later, does *Bring It On* still bring it—or should this cheerleading classic finally be benched? Tonight, Kat and Mark argue the case before the Judge!
