61 | How Can You Help Your Son Choose a College Major? | Career Planning for Teens
Sep 8, 202610 min
Is your son trying to decide what to major in—or wondering if he's chosen the right college major? Choosing a major can feel like a huge decision, especially when teens are being asked to think about a future career before they really know what that future will look like. In this episode of Raising Boys with Purpose™, we're talking about how moms can help their teen and young adult sons explore college majors and career options without adding more pressure to the process. We'll talk about looking beyond what your son enjoys to consider his strengths, job satisfaction, career opportunities, earning potential, job security, cost of education, and what the day-to-day work in a career actually looks like. I also share how we helped both of our sons get firsthand experience with careers they were considering—and why discovering what they didn't want to do was valuable too. Whether your son is just starting high school, choosing a college major now, or already questioning the major he chose, he doesn't have to have his entire future figured out. We can help our sons ask better questions, gather good information, explore their options, and seek God's guidance as they decide what comes next. In this episode: choosing a college major, career planning for teens, college planning, career exploration, job opportunities, college costs, preparing teens for adulthood, and helping sons make independent decisions. 60 | How Involved Should You Be in Your Son’s Sports? | Parenting Teen Boys
Sep 3, 20269 min
If your son plays sports, have you ever wondered what your role should look like as he gets older? Should you stay for practices? How involved should you be during games? And how do you encourage your son without accidentally becoming a distraction or stepping into the coach’s role? In this episode of Raising Boys with Purpose™, we’re talking about how moms can support their sons in sports while also giving them room to grow in confidence and independence. Because being a supportive sports mom doesn’t mean there’s one perfect way to do it. Every son is different. Every family has different schedules and responsibilities. And what our sons need from us can change as they get older. We’ll talk about finding that balance between showing up and stepping back, supporting the things that matter to our sons, and remembering that we don’t have to get it all exactly right. If you’re raising a teen or young adult son, this episode is an encouraging reminder that sometimes simply knowing Mom is in his corner matters more than we realize. 59 | Are Youth Sports Becoming Too Much for Our Families? | Raising Teen Boys
Sep 1, 20269 min
Youth sports can be a wonderful part of growing up. Our sons have opportunities to challenge themselves, develop confidence, learn from coaches and teammates, and discover what they're capable of. But youth sports have changed. For many families, recreational and school sports are only the beginning. Travel teams, year-round competition, tournaments, and specialized training can quickly turn a son's sport into a much bigger commitment for the entire family. So how do we know what's right for our son? In this episode of Raising Boys with Purpose™, we're looking at the benefits of youth sports for boys while also having an honest conversation about travel sports, competitive youth athletics, and the time, financial, and family commitments that can come with them. We're not trying to decide whether travel sports are good or bad. Instead, we're looking at the bigger picture: What do we really want our sons to gain from playing sports—and how do we make choices that support both our son and our family? If you're raising a teen boy who loves sports, considering a travel team, or wondering how far to encourage his athletic interests, this episode will give you some things to think about as you decide what works for your family. 58 | Empty Nest: What Comes Next for Mom? | Faith & Biblical Encouragement
Aug 27, 20269 min
What happens when you’ve spent years preparing your son to leave home…and then he actually does? For moms raising teen and young adult sons, we know independence is the goal. We want our boys to grow into capable young men with the faith, character, and life skills they need for adulthood. But knowing that doesn’t necessarily make the transition to an empty nest easy. In this Mom’s Perspective™ episode of Raising Boys with Purpose™, I’m sharing some of my own experience as my sons left home and I began adjusting to a quieter house and a different season of motherhood. We’ll talk about giving ourselves permission to miss our sons while still moving forward, staying connected as our relationships change, trusting God in a new season, and beginning to consider something we may not have thought much about while we were busy raising our kids—what comes next for us? Christian parenting doesn’t end when our sons leave home. It changes. And while they’re discovering what God has ahead for them, this can also be an opportunity for us to rediscover interests, invest in our marriages and relationships, try something new, and see where God may be leading us next. If you’re preparing for an empty nest, adjusting after your son has left for college or work, or learning how to parent a young adult from a little farther away, I hope this episode offers some biblical encouragement and reminds you that there is still so much ahead. Cell phones have become part of everyday life for our teen boys—but how do we help them learn to use them wisely? With schools across the country introducing new phone policies and growing concerns about screen time, distraction, social media, and mental health, many parents are wondering where the line should be. We want the safety and connection that phones provide, but we also see how easily they can compete for our sons’ attention. In this episode of Raising Boys with Purpose™, we’re talking about teen boys and cell phones, including how phone boundaries may look different from one family to another and why involving our sons in these conversations becomes increasingly important as they get older. Because our goal isn’t simply to control their screen time. It’s to help our sons develop the judgment, responsibility, and healthy technology habits they’ll need when we’re no longer there to set the limits for them. If you’re raising a teen or young adult son and trying to navigate phones, technology, independence, and life skills from a Christian parenting perspective, I hope this conversation encourages you to think about what works for your family—and reminds you that every conversation is another opportunity to prepare your son for adulthood.
