Flashline Crew 19: Mars in the Arctic
Flashline in the Arctic: Inside Mars on Earth with Crew 19 What is it really like to live and work at one of the most remote Mars analog stations on Earth? In this episode of Red Planet Live , we go inside the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) on Devon Island in the Canadian High Arctic with Crew 19 members Trevor Jahn and Dr. Laura Thomas . The conversation explores the realities of isolation, field science, crew dynamics, and operating in an environment that can serve as an analog for future missions to Mars. Dr. Laura Thomas shares a striking reflection on isolation: rather than making her feel vulnerable, the remoteness of the Arctic environment created an unexpected sense of safety — a fascinating insight into the psychology of living far from the rest of the world. Crew 19 also carried Flag 81 of The Explorers Club , a historic flag with its own long record of exploration and expeditions, taking it with them to Haughton Crater during the mission. Located on Devon Island, Haughton Crater and the surrounding polar desert provide one of Earth's most Mars-like environments. FMARS gives researchers an opportunity to study not only technologies and field procedures, but also the human experience of operating as a small crew in an isolated and extreme environment.
