Ep 424: How to Lead, Grow & Scale a Microschool Without Burning Out: Leadership, Hiring Teachers, Delegation, Systems, Building a Team & Growing Your School Beyond the Founder
What happens when the microschool you dreamed about actually starts to grow—and suddenly everything depends on you? When you first start a microschool, homeschool hybrid, private learning program, or alternative school, doing everything yourself can almost feel necessary. You're the founder. The teacher. The admissions director. The marketer. The parent communicator. The curriculum coordinator. The scheduler. The problem solver. The substitute. And sometimes even the person taking out the trash at the end of the day. But there comes a point when the very thing that helped you start your microschool can prevent you from growing it: Everything depends on you. In the final episode of my September series, What It Really Takes to Build a Microschool, we're talking about the fifth and final piece of my Lighthouse Framework: LEADING — The Lightkeeper. Throughout this series, we've explored: DREAM — The Foundation Why your microschool exists and what you're actually trying to build. TIME — The Structure How founders manage priorities, productivity, delegation, their calendars, and their lives while building a school. MONEY — The Fuel Tuition, budgeting, payroll, profit, cash flow, reserves, grants, fundraising and creating a financially sustainable microschool. MARKETING — The Light How families discover your school, understand what makes it different, trust your model and ultimately enroll. And now: LEADING — The Lightkeeper. Because eventually, building a sustainable microschool requires something more than being willing to work harder. It requires becoming the leader your next stage of growth needs. In this episode, we're talking about the transition from founder → doer → manager → leader, and why the way you lead a microschool with six students cannot necessarily be the way you lead one with 20, 50, 100—or multiple locations. If your enrollment doubled next August, what would break? Would admissions break? Billing? Parent communication? Teacher onboarding? Scheduling? Curriculum? Operations? Your leadership structure? Your calendar? Or would you break? Because there is a difference between building a school that you can keep carrying and building an organization capable of carrying the mission with you. In this episode, I'll share lessons from my own journey building Lighthouse Learning—from six students in my living room to a growing microschool serving many more children, families, teachers and programs. And one of the biggest lessons has been this: Just because you CAN carry everything doesn't mean you're supposed to keep carrying everything. ----more---- Microschool Masterminds: skool.com/microschool-masterminds Every Thursday from 12-1 pm (EST), join Makenzie Oliver, microschool founder, VELA connector, and instructional coach, along with other founders, parents, and dreamers, as we connect, inspire, and progress through the challenges and celebrations of starting, running, and growing a microschool!
