Courageous Yes & The Grace of Community Speaker: Rev. Susie Choi Scripture: Luke 1: 26-56 The Christian needs another Christian who speaks God’s Word to them. They needs them again and again when they becomes uncertain and discouraged… The Christ in their own heart is weaker than the Christ we encounter in one another, when our own hearts are uncertain, another can remind us of what is sure —Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together (adapted for inclusive language I. Encounter: God’s Invitation - Unexpected divine encounter & invitation - Mary’s “Yes” is not devoid of questions, uncertainty, and fear - Courage is not the absence of fear or questions - Faith can mean saying “yes” while still wondering, “How can this be?” - Sometimes endings make room for new beginnings II. Community: God’s Provision - Mary goes to Elizabeth - Kin not only by blood but united by unmistakable work of God - God’s provision of community in the midst of isolation - Community can become relational well and sanctuary - A facet of God’s grace made tangible in the presence of another III. Encouragement: The Gift of Blessing - Elizabeth recognizes God’s work in Mary - To bless someone is to: — Recognize & Discern God’s work in them — Name what is seen (physically and spiritually) — Celebrate God’s grace in them - Who has helped you see what God is doing in you? - Whose courageous “yes” might God be inviting you to bless? IV. Song: When hope finds it’s voice - Mary’s hope finds its voice in community - Her personal encounter becomes a vision of God’s redeeming work in the world - Mary’s song is personal but it is not private - She does not sing in isolation
