John 14 - The cure for a troubled heart
What do you do with a heart that won't settle down? In this episode of the Root Issues Podcast, we sit in John 14 and talk about troubled hearts, the seasons of life we didn't choose, and the one thing Jesus points to when everything else is shifting. The timing of this chapter matters. Jesus has just told His friends He's leaving. He's told Peter he'll deny Him before morning. These men are watching the season they've lived in for three years come to an end, and they have no idea what replaces it. That's when Jesus says: don't let your hearts be troubled. It's worth noticing that He isn't speaking from a distance. Earlier in this same gospel, John uses that exact word for Jesus Himself — troubled at Lazarus' tomb, troubled in spirit at the table. He knows what He's asking of them. And He says it twice. The phrase opens the chapter and closes it, wrapping everything in between: a place prepared, the way, the truth, the life, and a peace He describes as unlike anything the world hands out.
