Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
Ayurvedic Postpartum Care for Cesarean Recovery with Ashlee Sakaishi Wilkin
This episode is from a live workshop with Ashlee Sakaishi Wilkin, hosted for our student and professional communities. A cesarean birth is a major abdominal surgery, and recovery can bring a unique set of physical, emotional, and practical needs into the sacred postpartum window. In this conversation, Ashlee shares from both her experience as a postpartum caregiver and her own experience recovering from a cesarean birth. Through an Ayurvedic lens, we explore the increased vata that accompanies birth and surgery, and how conscious postpartum care can help bring warmth, nourishment, rest, presence, and support to the recovery process. Ashlee and Christine discuss practical considerations for supporting cesarean clients, including preparing for the cold and sensory intensity of the operating room, supporting digestion and elimination, nourishing tissue repair, managing pain, creating physical ease during those first days of recovery, and recognizing the emotional impact of a birth that may not have unfolded as planned. The conversation also brings us back to the Universal Mother Principles: love, simplicity, compassion, flexibility, non-judgment, community, intuition, and listening. These principles remind us that conscious caregiving is not about following a perfect protocol. It is about listening closely, meeting each person where they are, and creating circles of care around the birther and family. This is a practical and deeply personal conversation for postpartum caregivers, doulas, Ayurvedic practitioners, birth professionals, and anyone wanting to better understand how we can offer informed, compassionate care after cesarean birth. As Ashlee reminds us, the small things can make a profound difference during recovery. Sometimes conscious care begins with simply knowing what someone may need before they have to ask.
