Episode #32
Will Christians Be Judged If They're Already Forgiven?
Will Christians be judged, even after their sins are forgiven? Pastor Geoff Youlden tackles this uncomfortable question head-on, working from the Old Testament sanctuary service to explain what's really happening in heaven right now on our behalf. Youlden traces the daily sacrifice, where confessed sin was carried into the Holy Place and the sinner was cleansed, and the yearly Day of Atonement, where the sanctuary itself was cleansed and the accumulated record was placed on the scapegoat β not Christ, as is often mistakenly assumed. Anchored in Daniel 8:14 and Hebrews 9:23, he shows why the heavenly sanctuary must likewise be cleansed, and unpacks the doctrine of imputed sin using 2 Corinthians 5:21 to explain how Christ, and by extension the sanctuary, can bear sin without being sinful. The heart of the message wrestles with the tension so many believers feel: if forgiveness truly removes sin as far as the east is from the west, why does Scripture still describe a coming judgment? Using the picture of a courtroom where even a good judge owes the jury an explanation, Youlden argues that the record of forgiven sin remains available so the whole universe can see that God's forgiveness of habitual sinners like David is fair and complete. He closes with 2 Corinthians 5:10 and 1 Peter 4:17, both pointing to a judgment seat of Christ that believers β not just unbelievers β will stand before, and why that truth should deepen assurance rather than shake it, since forgiveness through confession is never in question.
