  Jesus Didn’t Come Just to Make Your Life Better What do we expect Jesus to do for us? In Matthew 16, Peter knows that Jesus is the Christ—but he doesn't understand what that means. When Jesus explains that He must suffer, die, and rise again, Peter rejects the idea. Jesus' response is shocking: “Get behind me, Satan!” We can make the same mistake today. We can turn Jesus into a political solution, a life coach, a source of self-improvement, or even a cosmic therapist. But Jesus came for something much greater. He came to suffer and die for our sins, rise from the dead, and give us eternal life. Our lives may not always become easier because we follow Jesus. We may suffer. We may be persecuted. We will eventually die. But because Christ died and rose again, death is not the end for those who trust in Him. That's the real comfort of the Gospel. Matthew 16 has been at the center of Christian debates about Peter, the papacy, the keys of the kingdom, and the nature of the Church for centuries. In this sermon, we take a careful look at what Jesus actually says. Peter certainly has an important role among the apostles, but does Matthew 16 establish a papal office? Is the Church built upon Peter—or upon the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God? We also consider how Jesus gives the authority to bind and loose to the whole Church and what the New Testament means when it describes the Church as the body of Christ.   God Still Gathers His Church

  Sometimes it looks like Christianity is losing. Church attendance declines. Churches close. Surveys tell us that fewer people identify as Christians. We look at the numbers and wonder: Is the Gospel still working? The story of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 gives us a powerful reminder: God is still at work—even when we can't see what He is doing. How did a Canaanite woman know to come to Jesus and call Him “Lord” and “Son of David”? How did Rahab, living in Jericho, come to trust in the God of Israel? How did Naaman, a Syrian military commander, end up confessing faith in the God of Israel? God was working behind the scenes. And He still is. The Gospel doesn't ultimately depend upon our programs, our demographics, or our ability to measure success. God gathers people into His Church through His Word, often in ways we never see coming.
