  I Thought I’d Failed. Then I Built Something That Actually Mattered.

  One year ago, I stopped posting on social media every single day. At the time, it felt like a failure. The idea behind it had not really worked, there was no real traction, and looking back, it was not scalable or something that would have truly fulfilled me. But what I realise now is that I still needed something. Something to build. Something to challenge me. Something I could obsess over. That became Renew. A year later, Renew has 14 young people on roll, is close to capacity, is expanding into new pathways including outdoor education and mechanics, and is preparing to double capacity later this year. This episode is about failure, ambition, risk, family, fulfilment and what can happen when you stop chasing the wrong thing and finally find something worth building.

  Being There Isn’t the Same as Being Present

  My youngest daughter turned 10 this week, and it made me think about trade-offs. I love being a dad. I also love building businesses, training, travelling and trying to create a full life. But there is always a cost to having lots of plates spinning. This week, I missed one of my daughter’s performances because I was too late getting a ticket. It was the first time I can remember missing something like that, and it really bothered me. It made me question the difference between physically being there and being properly present. In this episode, I talk about ambition, guilt, co-parenting, living between two places, switching off, putting phones away and trying to make sure that business success does not come at the expense of the relationships it is meant to support. I do not want less ambition. I just want to be better at being fully where I am.

That reaction says more than just something about football. We now seem to live in a world where everything is either incredible or a disaster, with very little room for context, patience or balance. In this episode, I talk about England, the media, business, leadership and why learning to stay level through the highs and lows might be one of the most important skills we can develop. Be a fountain, not a drain.

  For Someone Who Likes Control, Co-Parenting Is Not the One

  For someone who likes plans, clarity and consistency, co-parenting can be a real test. This week reminded me that not every situation needs the same response. With my daughters, I need consistency. When supporting someone through grief, I need presence. And in business, when circumstances change, I need action. I reflect on co-parenting, attending the funeral of Becky’s mum in Brighton, the importance of listening rather than always trying to fix things, and how recent changes to the PE and Sport Premium are pushing me to adapt and look for new opportunities. The challenge is knowing what you can control, what you can influence, and what you simply need to sit with.
