Markham Indy: Inside Review of IndyCar's Rough Friday & Racing Success
Todd takes you inside the inaugural Markham Indy, an NTT IndyCar Series street circuit event that delivered mixed results. Friday was rough—no cars on track and communication breakdowns frustrated fans and participants. But Saturday and Sunday proved this event has real potential, with drivers praising the smooth surface, close racing, and strong attendance. As the house PA announcer at the event, Todd shares insider perspective on what went wrong, what went right, and what first-time promoters need to know. IndyCar's Markham debut exposed the challenges of launching a new street circuit. Friday fell apart: the track wasn't ready, street closures and transit coordination arrived too late, and the lack of PA and big screens meant fans had zero communication about delays. But this wasn't poor planning alone—everyone involved shares responsibility, and giving yourself extra time and resources matters. Saturday and Sunday told a different story. The circuit earned rave reviews for its smooth surface and challenging layout. Drivers, teams, and fans responded positively to the racing quality and fan experience. Todd also calls out some hard truths: IndyCar's response was unnecessarily harsh toward the promoter; NASCAR Canada had a strong 23-car turnout but fumbled the marketing (no naming-rights partner, canceled autograph session despite having plenty of downtime); and communications tools—particularly social media updates—could have prevented the Friday frustration cycle. The bigger picture? This event can be excellent going forward. Adjustments to signage, pedestrian flow, and shuttle routes are standard for year-two improvement. The racing was solid. Fan feedback was positive. For a first-time event, that's a strong foundation. Like and subscribe to Speed Chronicles for insider racing analysis every Wednesday.
