Mental health issues among young adults are rising at an alarming rate. With increasing anxiety, depression, and other disorders, it’s crucial to understand the root causes and how we can provide support. This episode we sit with psychotherapist Roxanne Francis, and explore the mental health crisis affecting our youth, discuss the impact of community and familial support, and offer actionable strategies for fostering resilience in young people. The mental health crisis among young people in North America has escalated, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Many young individuals are grappling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and more. According to mental health professionals, the numbers are staggering, and a significant portion of the youth population is struggling silently. Community plays a pivotal role in the mental well-being of young people. A sense of belonging can significantly buffer against mental health challenges. When youth feel connected, they are more likely to thrive. Many young people today lack the support systems that foster a sense of belonging. The absence of community can lead to feelings of isolation and despair. Conversation Notes Resilience is developed through experiencing manageable struggles. Young people who face challenges can build distress tolerance, helping them cope with future difficulties. The shift in parenting styles, aimed at shielding children from hardship, can hinder their ability to handle adversity. -Finding Balance: It's essential to expose children to challenges appropriate for their age, allowing them to develop coping skills without overwhelming them. -Encouraging Growth Through Failure: Allowing young people to experience failure can be a valuable lesson. It helps them learn problem-solving skills and understand that setbacks are a part of life. -Supporting young people requires intentional efforts from parents, educators, and community leaders -Promote Open Communication and encourage youth to express their feelings and thoughts. Creating a safe space for dialogue can significantly reduce feelings of isolation. -Foster Problem-Solving Skills that will allow young people to navigate challenges independently while being available for guidance. This builds confidence and self-reliance. -Create Opportunities for Connection and engage in activities that promote bonding, whether it’s cooking, sports, or hobbies that interest the youth. -Recognize Signs of Distress, being vigilant for signs of mental health struggles, and take them seriously.
