Actor Ted Danson and Sulnick co-founded the American Oceans Campaign, which Sulnick directed for ten years while promoting marine environmental protection. He has represented victims of Bhopal, India, and those impacted by hazardous waste dumps, bringing his vast expertise as an environmental lawyer and educator to the forefront. Throughout the United States, Sulnick has built and collaborated with coalitions. He was the environmental director of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos in New Mexico, where he helped restore a coalition of environmental groups working to protect the Rio Grande. He pioneered the paradigm of “agreeing to disagree” and working with opposition when it benefits the environment, bringing together diverse stakeholders to achieve meaningful environmental progress. I have been an environmental activist since 1984, and my involvement in the Bhopal, India gas disaster as a lawyer. Since then, I’ve learned a lot about the techniques needed to protect Nature and our environment. In India, I came to realize that not only does Nature have a consciousness, but that She’s asking for our help to protect Her environment. While I want as many people as possible to read this book, it is especially important that this next generation of environmental activists read and embrace its message. In this time of climate change, it’s time for my generation of environmentalists to pass what we’ve learned, and the baton, to the next generation of environmental activists. In 2024, as I was writing this, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres issued a Code Red for humanity saying, “The alarm bells are deafening, and the evidence is irrefutable, we are unequivocally facing a climate emergency.” This is no longer about a hypothetical future. 2024 was globally the hottest year ever, with 2025 -2027 predicted to be hotter. 2025 was the first year the global average temperature exceeded the 1.5oC (2oF) tipping point” from which climate scientists say there is no coming back. Indeed, the temperature in Southern Iran reached an unlivable 180o F (82.3oC). Not coming back, according to climate scientists, means that after the tipping point, there will globally be a “new normal” of more severe heat, wildfires, droughts, storms, sea-level rise, and flooding. Species will shift their ranges toward the cooler poles and higher elevations. Humans, too, will be on the move, escaping the heat and droughts. Studies suggest there will be tens of millions of climate migrants by the end of the 21st century. And climate-related deaths will become part of our lives. There were 11,500 climate deaths in 2024.
